On Friday 18 August the Victorian Training Awards were held at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre with over 750 people attending.
|
Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, Gayle Tierney, congratulated the 15 winners who were amongst the record number of nominations received this year.
|
The late Professor Peter Noonan has been awarded the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement, honouring his significant role in shaping policy in Australia's higher education, training and skills system for more than 25 years.
|
Melbourne Polytechnic and TAFE Gippsland are among the winners in the training organisation categories, while winning businesses include Jayco Australia, New Plumbing Solutions and Beaufort & Skipton Health Service.
|
With award winners from across metro and regional Victoria including Gippsland, Bendigo, Ballarat and Mildura, this exceptional talent cements Victoria’s position as the national leader in vocational education and training.

Victorian Apprenticeship Taskforce
|
|
On Monday 21 August Victorian Treasurer Hon. Tim Pallas and Minister for Training and Skills Hon. Gayle Tierney commenced the Victorian Apprenticeship Taskforce.
|
The Taskforce will advise the Victorian Government and provide recommendations to improve safety in workplaces across the state ensuring more apprentices and trainees have a successful start to their career.
|
The lived experiences of apprentices and trainees will be at the heart of the Taskforce, with representatives from unions, various sectors and industries, and informed by an Apprentice and Trainee Reference Group.
|
“This Taskforce is a win for employers, apprentices and for fairness – we’re making sure safety and equality are at the heart of this workforce,” Mr Pallas said.
|
Justice Iain Ross, previously President of the Fair Work Commission and Federal Court Judge, will serve as a Special Adviser.
|
The $1.5 million Taskforce will be delivered by Apprenticeships Victoria and will address regulatory arrangements, incident responses, employer screening processes, complaint reporting and improve accountability.
|
“Apprentices and trainees are the future of Victoria’s workforce, and we’re ensuring that their training is in a safer and supportive environment that sets them up to succeed,” Ms Tierney concluded.

Jobs and Skills Australia Amendment Bill 2023
|
Earlier this week the Jobs and Skills Australia Amendment Bill 2023 passed through Parliament, finalising the governance structure and operational functions.
|
Professor Peter Dawkins AO will continue to lead Jobs and Skills Australia in the short term.
|
The structure includes a Ministerial Advisory Board to represent interests of states and territories, employee organisations, employer organisations, and other stakeholders, ensuring a diverse range of stakeholder views inform Jobs and Skills Australia’s work.
|
In addition to the organisation’s current role, additional functions will include:
|
- Providing advice to the Minister or Secretary in relation to the impact of workplace arrangements, including insecure work, on economic and social outcomes
- Identifying labour market imbalances and analysing the demand and supply of skills
- Analysing skills needs and workforce needs, including in regional, rural and remote Australia, and in relation to migration.
- Undertaking studies, including on opportunities to improve employment, vocational education and training (VET) and higher education outcomes for cohorts of individuals that have historically experienced labour market disadvantage and exclusion.
- Contributing to industry consultation forums
- In consultation with the Minister and other stakeholders, preparing and publishing an annual work plan.
The Minister for Skills and Training will commence a review of Jobs and Skills Australia within 2 years of the Amendment Bill commencing.

WorldSkills has wrapped up for 2023 bringing another year of talented Apprentices & Trainees to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in various trades.

Last week the Closing ceremony where 470+ competitors came together for the medal presentations in Melbourne. With New South Wales coming in first with the most gold wins Victoria coming in second and Western Australia coming in third.

The latest NCVER report shows that student enrolments in nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) have risen by 5.1% to 4.5 million in 2022. Total VET students and courses 2022 found that participation rates in nationally recognised VET increased in 2022, with 25.0% of Australian residents aged between 15 and 64 participating in VET (up from 24.0% in 2021). Australian residents aged between 15 and 19 had the highest participation rate at 45.7%. In 2022, the number of students enrolled in nationally recognised programs dropped by 1.3% to 2.1 million. However, the number of students enrolled in subjects that are not delivered as part of a nationally recognised program rose by 10.4% to 3.0 million. There has been an increase in student numbers over the past five years, up 11.3% between 2018 and 2022.

Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 1,106 participants have been supported to date.
|
|
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once registered, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer.
|
|
