With a significant focus on skills shortages and priority industries, governments are considering the best ways to create a skilled workforce to deliver on a range of key economic priorities.
A report, commissioned by the Apprenticeship Employment Network (AEN), was developed to gain a greater understanding of Victorian GTO commencements and completions rates.
Victorian GTOs support a more diverse candidate cohort than direct employers, with strong uptake in skills shortage and priority industries. The contract completion rates for Australian Apprentices with Victorian GTOs are 28% higher than direct employers, with individual completion rates 18% higher.
GTO completion rates in priority industries are up to 45% higher than for direct employers.

AustralianSuper is the nation’s largest superannuation fund(1), with over $180 billion invested in Australia(2), we’re supporting Australia’s economy while helping members achieve their best financial position in retirement.
- Our investment in the critical minerals industry, amounting to $11.5 billion. This investment will play an important role in leading Australia’s energy transition. Nearly $30 billion is allocated to real assets, impacting the daily lives of Australians, and advancing community development.
- Investments in digitisation including assets like Indara – a leading owner and operator of tower and rooftop telecommunication sites.
- Our investment in domestic transport logistics – for example Moorebank Logistics Park in Sydney. This state-of-the-art facility connects Port Botany to the interstate rail network.
- A diverse range of equity raisings. Since 2014, AustralianSuper has participated in nearly 300 equity raisings, providing more than $5.5 billion to Australian companies. We’ve also committed an additional $2 billion to supporting emerging Australian companies through our local investments in venture capital funds and micro-cap companies.
The examples above illustrate the fund’s support for business growth in Australia, job creation and innovation across various sectors of our economy. As AustralianSuper continues to grow in size and scale, so too will our investments in Australia’s economy.

AEN Indigenous Artwork
As part of NAIDOC Week, at the AEN Mid-Year Conference dinner we presented our latest indigenous artwork completed by Tiffany Hunter from Nerdu Badji Education in western metropolitan Melbourne.
Titled Circles of Commitment, the artwork highlights our mission and the member network to support youth into apprenticeships.
Our original artwork, titled Koori Dreaming was commissioned in 1995 and illustrates how Koori communities meet with Group Training Organisations to discuss what programs are available and to then support individuals with employment and training in the workplace.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST – Trade Facilitators
Fit to Drive deliver road safety education programs for young people, their families and the wider community. Since 2014 fit to drive has reached over 140,000 young people through face-to-face and online road safety education initiatives.
Fit to Drive is the service provider for a new pilot road safety project targeting construction industry apprentices aged 18-25 years old, who are on their ‘P’ plates and who are, or will soon commence, working in trades that require them to drive for work.
To deliver the project we require Trade Facilitators who will be responsible for the on-the-ground instruction and delivery of practical demonstrations which include road safety topics relevant to the construction industry and how to pack and restrain loads in vehicles and trailers.
This role will be co-facilitated with another Trade Facilitator, where together, you will deliver scripted learning activities and practical hands-on demonstrations.
Fit to Drive is looking for people with construction trade experience who can relate to young apprentices who use their car for work, and to engage them in conversations about strategies for dealing with risky and illegal situations on the job.
Fit to Drive will provide facilitation training and opportunities to extend your road safety knowledge. Experience working in a trade or with apprentices and trades people is essential. A current driver’s licence and a clean driving history is essential. We require you to have, or the ability to apply for, a Working With Children Check employee (WWCC). You will also undergo a police check and driver history check.
Delivery of the project commenced in June 2024 and will continue until December 2024. The positions will be appointed on a casual basis and require flexibility from candidates to be able to work during weekdays, Monday to Friday. There is potentially times when travel within Victoria will be available.
This casual position is covered under the SCHADS Award, Social and Community Services and pays $61.60 per hour plus superannuation.

The Apprentice Employment Network & The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australia is excited to provide 8 x $1000 scholarships through its The Edge Foundation Grants and Scholarships program again for 2024.
The Edge Foundation honours the work of the late Judith Wright, poet, environmentalist and campaigner for Aboriginal Land Rights and recipient of the Australian National Living Treasure Award in 1998.
This scholarship commits to recognise and promote the youth training and career work undertaken by Group Training Organisations and the Apprentice Employment Network in each state.
This is open to current apprentices and trainees under the age of 21 employed by a Group Training Organisation that is an AEN member in that state. Apprentices or Trainees must be in employment as of 30th June 2024.
The scholarship is to be used for career development. It can not be used to purchase items unrelated to their apprenticeship or traineeship.
8 x $1000 scholarships are available. We intend to provide one scholarship per Australian state or territory. This means there is one for Victoria for our membership. Should there be no nominations from a state or territory, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards reserves the right to reallocate the unused funds to another state to issue.
Full details and additional information can be found on this page. The nomination form can be found at the bottom of this page.
To make a nomination, the apprentice/trainee (or Field Officer should the individual have a barrier to present) must submit a 60-second video. In the video, they will need to cover the following:
- Who are they, and where are they from?
- What is their apprenticeship or traineeship?
- What are their career ambitions?
- How will a $1000 scholarship help them achieve their career ambitions?
The more information they share about themselves, the better the judges understand their story. They can provide a PDF file containing their resume and other supporting documentation with the nomination.
Applications close Wednesday 31st July 2024.
