Labor Ministers Update

This week, Federal Labor Ministers Brendan O'Connor and Linda Burney announced their retirement and will not recontest the next election.

Burney, who is the Minister for Indigenous Australians, and O'Connor, who is Skills and Training Minister, will also step down from their positions in cabinet prompting a ministry reshuffle.
Burney was the first Aboriginal person to be elected to the NSW Parliament, where she served for more than a decade.

She then became the first Aboriginal woman elected to the Federal House of Representatives in 2016, when she won the Sydney seat of Barton.

O'Connor was elected to parliament in 2001 and has served as a minister in three Labor governments.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the work of both retiring ministers, saying they had "made an outstanding contribution to our government and to our country".

"I am proud to have witnessed first-hand their passion for this nation, their determination to leave the country better for their contribution as members of Parliament and as ministers," he said.

Speaking of O'Connor, Albanese said: "You won't find a more decent human being."

"I deeply respect his judgement; I highly value his advice that I have sought not just in his portfolio but across a range of issues over a long period of time.

"I'm extremely grateful for his friendship."

Albanese said their retirements would provide the opportunity for a cabinet "refresh".

"This morning I've spoken with the Caucus chair, nominations will be called for frontbench positions to be filled in accordance with our Caucus rules," he said.

A new ministerial lineup is expected to be announced on Sunday in Canberra.

Building Women’s Careers Program

Announced in the 2024-25 Budget as part of a Future Made in Australia, the Building Women's Careers Program is providing $50 million for partnership projects to drive systemic structural and cultural change in training and work environments.

The program will fund both large-scale partnership projects, and smaller, place-based partnerships, to advance structural and cultural change to improve women’s access to flexible, safe and inclusive training and work opportunities in the key male-dominated industries and sectors of construction, manufacturing, clean energy and digital and technology.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations is consulting with stakeholders to inform the design of the grant guidelines to implement the Building Women’s Careers program.

Closing date for written submissions - 5 August 2024 at 10.00am AEST.

The Apprentice Employment Network & The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Australia is excited to provide 8 x $1000 scholarships through its The Edge Foundation Grants and Scholarships program again for 2024.

The Edge Foundation honours the work of the late Judith Wright, poet, environmentalist and campaigner for Aboriginal Land Rights and recipient of the Australian National Living Treasure Award in 1998.

This scholarship commits to recognise and promote the youth training and career work undertaken by Group Training Organisations and the Apprentice Employment Network in each state.

Selection Process

This is open to current apprentices and trainees under the age of 21 employed by a Group Training Organisation that is an AEN member in that state. Apprentices or Trainees must be in employment as of 30th June 2024.

The scholarship is to be used for career development. It can not be used to purchase items unrelated to their apprenticeship or traineeship.

8 x $1000 scholarships are available. We intend to provide one scholarship per Australian state or territory. This means there is one for Victoria for our membership. Should there be no nominations from a state or territory, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards reserves the right to reallocate the unused funds to another state to issue.

How to apply

Visit The Duke of Ed - Apprentice Employment Network Scholarships.

Full details and additional information can be found on this page. The nomination form can be found at the bottom of this page.

To make a nomination, the apprentice/trainee (or Field Officer should the individual have a barrier to present) must submit a 60-second video. In the video, they will need to cover the following:
  • Who are they, and where are they from?
  • What is their apprenticeship or traineeship?
  • What are their career ambitions?
  • How will a $1000 scholarship help them achieve their career ambitions?
The more information they share about themselves, the better the judges understand their story. They can provide a PDF file containing their resume and other supporting documentation with the nomination.

Applications close Wednesday 31st July 2024.
