August is Tradies National Health Month, an initiative run by the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) to raise awareness about the importance of tradies health and wellbeing.

Hazardous manual handling is the most common cause of injury in Victorian workplaces, leading to injuries known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs include ligament and tendon damage, back injuries, sprains and hernias.

MSDs account for 30% of injuries sustained by Victorian construction workers. They can range in severity from a temporary strain, right up to debilitating injuries. They can end careers, impair a person's physical and mental health and their quality of life long-term.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of death and serious injury in Victoria's construction sector:
  • Over the past 10 years there have been 17 construction workers killed due to falls.
  • Over the past 5 years more than 6,400 construction workers have needed workers' compensation for serious injuries from a fall; many of these injuries have been life changing.
Now more than ever, identifying risks of hazardous manual handling and falls from height should be top of mind.

Get the right tools for the job by taking advantage of free programs that offer support to help you build awareness of hazardous manual handling and falls from heights.
Australia’s 3G networks are switching off.

If you are running a small business, it’s important to know if you'll be impacted, and have time to upgrade your phones and other devices before they’re switched off.

If you receive notice from your service provider that your device is impacted, it is recommended you take urgent action to stay connected.

What you need to know

Telstra, Optus and TPG Telecom (including Vodafone) are switching off their 3G networks. By doing so they will boost the capacity, speed and reliability of their 4G and 5G networks.

Telstra plans to switch off their 3G network on 31 August, and Optus from 1 September. TPG Telecom already switched off their 3G network on 30 January.

This may impact 3G-enabled devices used by your business and industry, such as mobile phones, tablets, smart watches, eftpos machines, personal emergency response solutions and medical alarms.

If you're using 3G-enabled devices such as these, you’ll need to upgrade your network before the switch off takes place.

Some 4G-enabled devices may have aspects that rely on 3G. You should check with your service provider or device manufacturer whether this will impact you.

VET in Schools 2023

The latest NCVER report shows that the number of students undertaking vocational education and training (VET) as a part of their senior secondary certificate of education has increased in 2023.

The VET in Schools 2023 report shows the number of students increased by 3.8% to 252,105 in 2023, when compared with the previous year. Of these students, 19,310 (or 7.7%) participated in a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, and 232,795 (or 92.3%) in other VET in Schools programs, however these numbers are lower in Victoria.

In 2023, about a quarter of Australian school students aged 15 to 19 participated in VET in Schools.

All VET in Schools students were enrolled in a program. Most program enrolments were in training package qualifications, which accounted for 92.8% of enrolments. More than half of the enrolments were in Certificate II level qualifications, and about a third in Certificate III.
