Hazardous manual handling is the most common cause of injury in Victorian workplaces, leading to injuries known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs include ligament and tendon damage, back injuries, sprains and hernias.
MSDs account for 30% of injuries sustained by Victorian construction workers. They can range in severity from a temporary strain, right up to debilitating injuries. They can end careers, impair a person's physical and mental health and their quality of life long-term.
Falls remain one of the leading causes of death and serious injury in Victoria's construction sector:
- Over the past 10 years there have been 17 construction workers killed due to falls.
- Over the past 5 years more than 6,400 construction workers have needed workers' compensation for serious injuries from a fall; many of these injuries have been life changing.
Now more than ever, identifying risks of hazardous manual handling and falls from height should be top of mind.
Get the right tools for the job by taking advantage of free programs that offer support to help you build awareness of hazardous manual handling and falls from heights.

National Energy Workforce Strategy
The Australian Government is consulting on a National Energy Workforce Strategy to build the skills and capability we need to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
The government welcomes community and industry stakeholder input on how the strategy can address key challenges for the energy workforce, including:
- attracting and retaining workers
- ensuring productive quality careers in energy supply and demand sectors
- improving coordination between the Australian, state and territory governments.
Net zero will involve transitioning our energy system to renewables and supporting new industries to grow.
The strategy will need to ensure the workforce has the skills and capability to progress a range of initiatives to achieve net zero, including the Capacity Investment Scheme, the Hydrogen HeadStart program, the Powering the Regions fund, the Rewiring the Nation program, offshore wind projects, the Future Made in Australia program and more.
The strategy will support the transition by providing opportunities for many Australians to build meaningful careers in the energy sector, including people living in regional areas, women and First Nations people.
The strategy will also coordinate action in response to global labour challenges to ensure we have a stable workforce.
The consultation closes at 5:00pm (AEST) on 31 August 2024.

Business Writing for the Digital Era
Writing proper business-related documents in today’s workplace requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals behind how specific documents should be approached, designed and edited. Written communications in the workplace should be concise, yet thorough and well laid out.
Technology enabled communications (emails and texts) should also be well thought out and designed to get the correct message across, while avoiding any potential misinterpretation.
This newly designed course teaches how to create business documents in the modern workplace, which takes into account the many forms that modern communication can take and teaches participants how to best align their message with the appropriate documentation and device.
