Hazardous manual handling is the most common cause of injury in Victorian workplaces, leading to injuries known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs include ligament and tendon damage, back injuries, sprains and hernias.
MSDs account for 30% of injuries sustained by Victorian construction workers. They can range in severity from a temporary strain, right up to debilitating injuries. They can end careers, impair a person's physical and mental health and their quality of life long-term.
Falls remain one of the leading causes of death and serious injury in Victoria's construction sector:
- Over the past 10 years there have been 17 construction workers killed due to falls.
- Over the past 5 years more than 6,400 construction workers have needed workers' compensation for serious injuries from a fall; many of these injuries have been life changing.
Now more than ever, identifying risks of hazardous manual handling and falls from height should be top of mind.
Get the right tools for the job by taking advantage of free programs that offer support to help you build awareness of hazardous manual handling and falls from heights.

$12m Boost to VET Workforce
This week the Federal Government announced a $12 million boost for skilled teachers and trainers to mark the start of National Skills Week 2024.
The funding will enable Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs) to better respond to workforce challenges in the VET sector across industries, including aged and disability care, energy and renewables, and construction and manufacturing.
All 10 JSCs will receive funding to study workforce challenges and identify industry-led responses, in consultation with Jobs and Skills Australia and VET industry stakeholders.
Nine out of ten jobs created require post-compulsory qualifications and almost half of these will be through vocational education and training.
This year’s National Skills Week theme, VET - It’s a Game Changer reflects the integral role that VET will play in Australia’s future, with Fee-Free TAFE at its heart.

NSW Government Release Final VET Report
The announcement, made at the National Skills Week event, hosted by Business Sydney and SkillsOne, emphasised the importance of skills development and vocational training in shaping the future workforce of the state.
The final report follows an extensive review and consultation process, including regional tours, roundtable sessions, a Skills Symposium, and discussions with more than 1,100 contributors.
The VET Review, a key election commitment, aims to provide a roadmap for rebuilding TAFE NSW, supporting learners, and strengthening the voice of local industry.
The final report contains 21 recommendations designed to transform and better integrate the VET system while supporting its stakeholders.
Key areas of focus include a new needs-based funding model, improved coordination of critical services, and enhanced support for equity cohorts, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander learners and those in regional areas.
The final report advocates for stronger ties and collaboration between government and industry, including formal commitments on skills development within priority sectors as well as building links between high school and post school training.
The NSW Government will consider all recommendations from both the interim and final reports and provide a formal response in due course.
In the meantime, work has already begun on progressing recommendations of the VET Review’s interim report, including commencing consultations on a new TAFE NSW Charter, and a revised TAFE NSW operating model.

This year’s theme is Share a story, stop a scam.
This annual reminder is a perfect opportunity to check how scam aware you and your business is.
The Australian Taxation office reports that since January, nearly 80% of all scams reported relate to emails.
While scams are becoming more sophisticated, there are red flags you can share to help your employees quickly spot a fake email
- look out for messages containing a link that asks you to login to a government service such as myGov. The ATO recently removed all hyperlinks in unsolicited, outbound SMS, so if you've received a message from the ATO that contains a link, it’s a scam.
- be careful of requests for personal or financial information, especially if they claim to be urgent or time sensitive. We never ask for passwords, account numbers, or other sensitive data via email, SMS or unsolicited phone calls.
- be wary of downloading attachments or opening email links. They can infect your computer with malware and lead to your business's information being stolen and used to commit fraud.
- watch out for unusual transactions or interactions on your accounts. If you’re unsure whether contact from the ATO is genuine, don’t engage with it and verify it. You can also look at scam alerts.
The more we hear, the better equipped we are to prevent Australians from being scammed.
