Last week, Jobs and Skills Australia released a new report - Occupation Shortage Report.

The Occupation Shortage Report offers analysis on occupations experiencing shortage pressures.

Some highlights from the report include:

  • Fill rates increased 1.7 percentage points to 66.2%.
  • Metropolitan fill rates are above the rates for regional areas.
  • Fill rates for Skill Level 3 occupations rose above 50% for the first time since September quarter 2021.
  • Technicians and Trades Workers rates are at 51.9%, the lowest of all major groups.
  • From 2014-2023, Managers and Professionals have had above average and increased hourly earnings over time.
The Occupation Shortage Report (OSR) (formerly the Skills Shortage Quarterly report) offers analysis on occupation shortage pressures using data from Jobs and Skills Australia’s Survey of Employers who Recently Advertised.

The Skills Priority List will also be re-named the Occupation Shortage List.

The next release and more information will be available soon.
Changes to workplace laws will commence on 26 August 2024 as part of the Closing Loopholes reforms.

The Fair Work Ombudsman has information available to help you prepare:
  • Changes to casual employment including how casual work is defined, pathways to permanent employment and employee and employer responsibilities.
  • Changes to independent contractor rules including a change to the definition of employment.
  • A new right to disconnect for employees which gives eligible employees the right to refuse contact outside their working hours unless that refusal is unreasonable. This doesn’t apply to small businesses until 26 August 2025.
  • New minimum standards and protections for ‘employee-like workers’ in the gig economy.
For more information and resources visit the Fair Work Ombudsman.
In two weeks it will be R U OK? Day, the National Day of Action (12 September) and the most important message is to remind everyone to Ask R U OK? Any Day, because life happens every day.

There will be plenty of R U OK? activities and events in workplaces, schools or communities.
Please register your activities. Demand has been high for our R U OK? Community Ambassadors who are fully booked through to 1 October but there is a range of presentation resources and videos you can use as an alternative.

You can also organise an R U OK? activity any day of the year so download the Guide to Supporting R U OK? and check out the free resources for lots of tips on how you can share the R U OK? message and promote connection in your community.

Mastering Strategic Planning for Effective Leadership

The key challenge in achieving organisational outcomes often lies in the ambiguity surrounding our purpose and the misalignment of vision, mission, values and goals. This hands-on session offers a wealth of proven strategies and frameworks to clarify the organisation’s purpose, align the team, and drive performance.

Through interactive exercises, you will brainstorm and develop growth strategies, set SMART goals, identify Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for focused action, and create a detailed action plan to translate the organisational vision into reality. You will leave with a clear roadmap for strategic planning, empowering you to lead with confidence and achieve your goals.

Business Writing for the Digital Era

Writing proper business-related documents in today’s workplace requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals behind how specific documents should be approached, designed and edited. Written communications in the workplace should be concise, yet thorough and well laid out.

Technology enabled communications (emails and texts) should also be well thought out and designed to get the correct message across, while avoiding any potential misinterpretation.
This newly designed course teaches how to create business documents in the modern workplace, which takes into account the many forms that modern communication can take and teaches participants how to best align their message with the appropriate documentation and device.

Becoming Change Agile to Master Uncertainty

It can be tough dealing with the pace of change and the uncertainty that goes with it. However, it is important for leaders to learn how to embrace, navigate, and lead through change effectively. And the more change agile we are, the better prepared we are to respond when things move fast.

This session introduces you to the ADKAR change management model and explores different leadership techniques to lead yourself and your team through challenging times with purpose and poise.

Time: 10:00am - 1:30pm
