October is National Safe Work Month.

While health and safety should be acknowledged every day of the year, this month gives employers an opportunity to commit to building better workplaces for their employees.

Individuals, their families and communities are all impacted by work-related injuries or illness.

Safe Work Australia data shows that around 169 people died while doing their job in 2021 and there were around 130,195 serious workers compensation claims made in 2020-2021.

This year’s National Safe Work Month theme is FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY, WORK SAFELY.

Safe Work Australia has a range of information, resources and tools you can use to promote healthy and safe workplaces.

Worksafe Victoria will also be hosting a number of webinars and face to face workshops on various OH&S topics throughout October.

Australia Worldskills Team

On Thursday this week the WorldSkills Australia team was farewelled to represent the country at the 47th International Competition, taking place in the French city of Lyon between 10-15 September.

The contingent of 33 young apprentices, trainees, and students (known as the Skillaroos) is the largest the organisation has sent overseas since Lyon last hosted in 1995. The WorldSkills Australia delegation of competitors, trainers, officials, and team management, is the largest ever sent to an International Competition.

The 47th International Competition is set to be the biggest skills competition ever, with over 1,500 Competitors from 75 countries set to compete in 59 skills. More than 250,000 visitors are also expected to attend the event, which will run from September 10 -15.

Worldskills Australia’s participation in the International Competition aims to benchmark Australian skills excellence against global standards.

Team Australia members represent the best in their fields, which include Plumbing, Carpentry, Baking, Industry 4.0, Cyber Security, and Fashion Design.

The journey for selection has spanned two years, beginning with a regional WorldSkills competition in 2022 that involved more than 3,000 competitors.

Winners from each region then competed in the National Championships in 2023, with medallists being eligible for selection in Team Australia that will travel to France.

We wish all the best of luck to the competitors.

In a recent research report, the United Nations highlighted that labour markets in advanced economies remained tight, with unemployment rates hitting record lows in the first four months of 2024.

However, analysis from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) shows signs of a softening of the labour market, including a decline in job postings between February and May 2024 in Australia and several other developed countries.

This drop aligns with other analysis indicating that job vacancies have fallen across most advanced economies throughout the year.

Despite these shifts, the OECD report also revealed that women have outperformed men in the labour market since the pandemic, particularly in countries like Australia, Japan and South Korea, where employment growth for women has been notably strong.

In two weeks it will be R U OK? Day, the National Day of Action (12 September) and the most important message is to remind everyone to Ask R U OK? Any Day, because life happens every day.

There will be plenty of R U OK? activities and events in workplaces, schools or communities.
Please register your activities. Demand has been high for our R U OK? Community Ambassadors who are fully booked through to 1 October but there is a range of presentation resources and videos you can use as an alternative.

You can also organise an R U OK? activity any day of the year so download the Guide to Supporting R U OK? and check out the free resources for lots of tips on how you can share the R U OK? message and promote connection in your community.

This session introduces you to the ADKAR change management model and explores different leadership techniques to lead yourself and your team through challenging times with purpose and poise.
