We are thrilled to announce that this year's 2024 Apprentice Training Awards have received an outstanding 120 nominations, a testament to the talent and dedication across Victoria’s Group Training sector.

The stage is set, and the spotlight is shining bright on Victoria's apprentices, trainees, and Group Training organisations.

It’s time to applaud their hard work, dedication, and remarkable achievements as the 2024 Apprentice Training Awards, hosted by Apprenticeship Employment Network and Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) Australia, kick off.

These prestigious awards celebrate excellence in the group training sector and recognise the exceptional contributions of apprentices, trainees, GTO members, staff, and Industry Partners across Victoria.

Closing of WorldSkills International Competition

The WorldSkills competition was held between 11-15 September in Lyon France with over 1400 competitors from 86 countries.

Australia won a bronze medal in welding and 14 excellence awards.

The AEN & GAN Australia were proudly sponsored Apprentices Jayme Cannon and Luke Green, supported the event and participated in the WorldSkills conference.

Careers with STEM Magazine

The National Careers Institute (NCI) in collaboration with Refraction Media, has released a special edition of the Careers with STEM magazine titled Electrician: The Future is Clean Job Kit.

The Job Kit was informed by stakeholder input highlighting limited awareness of the scope of clean energy sector jobs as a barrier to individuals entering the sector.

The Job Kit features Jennah Halley, the 2022 Australian Apprentice of the Year Winner and Jack Higgins, the 2023 Australian Apprentice of the Year Finalist both sharing their firsthand experience working in the sector; provides information about the New Energy Apprenticeships and the occupation and sector information on the Your Career website; and includes a message from Australia’s Chief Scientist (Dr Cathy Foley) highlighting the central role of electricians in achieving Net Zero.

In October, Refraction Media will distribute 9,000 hard copies nationally to educational institutions, careers advisers and STEM organisations.

Overall apprentice and trainee completion rates down in 2023
The latest report released today by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) shows that overall completion rates for apprentices and trainees decreased in 2023.

Government-funded students and courses – January to March 2024
Provides a summary of data relating to domestic Government-funded VET activity delivered in Australia. It contains information on students, programs, subjects, and training providers.

Completion and attrition rates for apprentices and trainees 2023
This publication presents completion and attrition rates for apprentices and trainees four years after commencement for contracts and individuals.
October is National Safe Work Month.

While health and safety should be acknowledged every day of the year, this month gives employers an opportunity to commit to building better workplaces for their employees.

Individuals, their families and communities are all impacted by work-related injuries or illness.

Safe Work Australia data shows that around 169 people died while doing their job in 2021 and there were around 130,195 serious workers compensation claims made in 2020-2021.

This year’s National Safe Work Month theme is FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY, WORK SAFELY.

Safe Work Australia has a range of information, resources and tools you can use to promote healthy and safe workplaces.

Worksafe Victoria will also be hosting a number of webinars and face to face workshops on various OH&S topics throughout October.

Becoming Change Agile to Master Uncertainty

It can be tough dealing with the pace of change and the uncertainty that goes with it. However, it is important for leaders to learn how to embrace, navigate, and lead through change effectively. And the more change agile we are, the better prepared we are to respond when things move fast.

This session introduces you to the ADKAR change management model and explores different leadership techniques to lead yourself and your team through challenging times with purpose and poise.

Business Writing for the Digital Era

Writing proper business-related documents in today’s workplace requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals behind how specific documents should be approached, designed and edited. Written communications in the workplace should be concise, yet thorough and well laid out.

Technology enabled communications (emails and texts) should also be well thought out and designed to get the correct message across, while avoiding any potential misinterpretation.
