It's time to applaud their hard work, dedication, and remarkable achievements as the 2023 Apprentice Training Awards, hosted by AEN and Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN) Australia, kick off.

These prestigious awards are all about recognising excellence in the group training sector and acknowledging the outstanding contributions of apprentices, trainees, GTO members, staff, and Industry Partners across Victoria.
|
AEN received over 140 nominations with finalists to be announced on 9th October 2023.

Released in September 2023, the Employment White Paper - Working Future - builds on the Summit themes and outcomes and outlines the Government’s vision for a dynamic and inclusive labour market. One where everyone has the opportunity for secure, fairly paid work and people, businesses and communities can be beneficiaries of change and thrive.
|
Five ambitious objectives contribute to achieving the Government’s vision:

- Delivering sustained and inclusive full employment
- Promoting job security and strong, sustainable wage growth
- Reigniting productivity growth
- Filling skills needs and building our future workforce
- Overcoming barriers to employment and broadening opportunity
Key issues for Australia’s labour market were explored through a wide‑ranging, year‑long stakeholder engagement process with on-the-ground consultations in every state and territory, partnering with researchers and academics and over 400 public submissions.

The Treasury Employment Taskforce engaged with over 250 stakeholders, including meeting with people with lived experience and from diverse backgrounds.
|

|
Health and Safety Month - October 2023
|
From Warrnambool to Wodonga, WorkSafe will visit 17 locations across Victoria in October, giving employers and workers the opportunity to hear from health and safety experts, industry leaders and pioneers in workplace safety.
|
The free, expert-led safety events are tailored to suit the needs of each community, and registrations for all sessions are now open.
|
Mentally healthy workplaces, hazardous manual handling, helping newly arrived migrant workers understand their safety rights, and dealing with drugs and alcohol in the workplace are just some of the items on this year's agenda.
|
Breakfast or lunch will be provided at each event, as well as a Q&A session where participants can raise their queries or concerns around workplace health and safety.
|
Former Cats captain turned commentator Cameron Ling is on board again, hosting a Business Owner's Breakfast at Essendon Fields plus other events in Shepperton, Traralgon, Geelong, Pakenham and Bendigo.
|
The month will conclude with a week-long series of webinars, with Health and Safety Month Ambassador Sean Aherne taking to the virtual stage to lead insightful discussions on how to enhance health and safety in workplaces.

National Skills Passport
|
The Federal Government announced earlier this week it would progress a National Skills Passport, in consultation with industry and governments, as part of our efforts to help workers promote their qualifications and businesses find more skilled workers.
|
As a direct result of the Employment White Paper that was also released earlier this week, the Government will prepare a business case to define the scope, outcomes and benefits of a National Skills Passport.
|
A National Skills Passport has the potential to make it easier for employees to demonstrate their skills, change jobs and upskill, while making it simpler for employers to hire new staff with the skills and qualifications they need. This initiative forms part of our efforts to promote lifelong learning, which is a key reform direction outlined in the Employment White Paper.
|
A Skills Passport could combine a person’s qualifications across VET and higher education to more effectively demonstrate their skills to employers.
|
The Government will consult widely with businesses, unions, tertiary institutions, states and territories and students in scoping an integrated National Skills Passport to better understand the needs and demands on different parties.
|
The Government is committing $9.1 million to support a business case and consultation to inform Government decision making.
|
The Government’s vision is for a dynamic and inclusive labour market where everyone has the opportunity for secure, fairly paid work and people, businesses and communities can be beneficiaries of change and thrive.
|

Labour Force Survey Results
|
The latest Labour Force Survey results for August is shows:
|
- employment rebounded strongly, by 64,900 (or 0.5 per cent) over the month, to a record high of 14,107,900 in August 2023.
- employment is now 410,700 (or 3.0 per cent) above the level recorded a year ago.
The September Australian Labour Market update brings together a range of JSA and ABS data sources to analyse the current state of the Australian labour market.

- the continued overall strength of the Australian labour market across 2022-23
- variations in outcomes across industries, occupations and skill levels; and
- a slight easing in both job advertisements and recruitment difficulty over the second half of 2022-23.
|

Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
This in-depth Indigenous cultural awareness training provides a thorough understanding of Australian Aboriginal history, government policies and their impacts on Aboriginal society.
|
During this session, participants will hear about current day challenges affecting Aboriginal communities and activities both nationally and in Victoria to improve existing shortfalls in key areas of disadvantage for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Empowering Others to Perform & Excel
Great leaders inspire great teams. And great teams require a culture of employees being independent and motivated individuals, performing interdependently within their team and forming key collaborations for long-term success.

Youth Mental Health First-Aid (Accredited)
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs authorised by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by MHFA instructors across Australia.

The Accredited Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults working with adolescents (up to 18 years of age), however the course is relevant for those helping people who are a little older.
|

Best Lift, Best Work
‘Best Life, Best Work’ apprentice wellbeing program is designed to provide younger workers (and those new to work in industry settings) with information, insight and awareness around risks facing young and inexperienced workers that can impact on their employment, on safety at work and on personal wellbeing.

The purpose of this program is to ensure that every young worker is inspired – through awareness and understanding – to thrive in their chosen careers, to protect their employment, to be always at their best,to work safely always and to also ensure the wellbeing and safety of colleagues and co-workers.

Employee Engagement Training
Employee engagement involves helping employees to become more productive, focused and organised. The success of your staff is directly related to the success of any organisation. The latest NCVER data shows that just over half of young Australians completed a post-school qualification by age 22. Generation Z: Life at 22 uses results from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) to explore how young people fared when they were 22 years old in 2022. According to the data, by age 22, the highest qualification completed for just over a quarter (26%) of young people was a vocational qualification, while a further quarter (25%) had completed a university degree. When compared with 22-year-olds in 2016, the percentage of 22-year-olds who were unable to meet their basic needs such as paying their rent or mortgage or heating their home increased, while the proportion of young Australians reporting a probable mental illness more than doubled.

Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 1,122 participants have been supported to date.
|
|
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once registered, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer.
|
|
