The International Labour Organization (ILO) reports in its World Employment and Social Outlook: Trends 2024 that, while global unemployment and jobs gap rates have dropped below pre-pandemic levels, a rise in unemployment is anticipated in 2024.
The labour market, resilient amid economic challenges, shows signs of fragility with inequalities and stagnant productivity. In 2023, the global unemployment rate was 5.1%, improving from 2022. However, 2024 is expected to see a rise to 5.2%, with an additional two million job seekers.
Income disparities, particularly between high and low-income countries, persist, and working poverty is likely to continue.
The report highlights worsening income inequality and a static rate of informal work, which could hinder sustained economic recovery.

The latest NCVER report shows that apprentice and trainee completions have risen by 13.6% to 101 580 in the 12 months ending June 2023. Non-trade completions rose by 14.7% to 53 445, while trade completions increased by 12.1% to 48 035. The increase in completions in the June 2023 quarter is a result of growth in commencements between 2020 and 2022, which coincided with the government stimulus measures to support employers engage and retain apprentices and trainees during the COVID pandemic. Overall, there were 377 715 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2023, a decrease of 12.0% from 30 June 2022.

The 2023 VET student outcomes report shows that vocational education and training (VET) graduates’ employment outcomes continue to improve. The report offers a comprehensive overview of student outcomes and satisfaction for those who completed nationally recognised VET programs in the previous calendar year. These insights are based on participation in Australia's largest VET student survey, the National Student Outcomes Survey. When compared with the previous year, two-thirds of students who completed a vocational qualification at certificate I or above had an improved employment outcome, up 2.6 percentage points. In 2023, 79.5% of graduates were employed after training, the highest level seen since the survey was expanded in 2016 to cover all nationally recognised training, not just government funded. This supports the findings by Jobs and Skills Australia that just over 60.0% of total employment growth in 2022 was in occupations where VET qualifications are the primary pathway (Jobs and Skills Australia 2023).
