Skillsroad – 2018 Youth Census Report
|
|
|
|
In September 2018 ASA conducted the largest Youth Census in Australia with over 30,000 youth, aged 15-24 completing the survey.
|
The research was commissioned by Apprenticeship Support Australia in response to concerns regarding rising youth unemployment and a range of evident changes in today’s workforce.
|
This vitally important research conducted by leading Registered Psychologist Danielle Buckley in close collaboration with other industry experts, explores how our youth are faring and the impact their hopes and fears is having on them as they transition from education into the workforce. The findings aim to raise awareness about the critical importance of young people in Australia having unbiased access to information about all the careers and study options available to them.

Additionally, the findings are intended to inform parents, teachers and current or future employers about challenges and concerns youth across Australia are facing and resulting wellbeing levels, as well as what this means for our workforce at a bigger scale.
|

Victorian GTO Funding – 2018/19 Fact Sheet
|
Late last week the Victorian Department of Education and Training released their updated GTO funding fact sheet for 2018/19.
|
As you may be aware, a continuation of funding for GTOs under the Victorian Group Training Program has been approved.
|
New funding agreements will need to be executed to action funding for this financial year. These will be in the form of a common funding agreement (similar to the format used for the agreements which have just lapsed).
|
The new agreement will require your GTO’s:
|
- Legal name
- ABN
- Primary Contact for the purpose of the agreement
- Phone number for the primary contact
- E-mail
If these have changed since the previous agreements were executed in April 2016 please provide updated information.

OctoberVet
|
|
Last Thursday AVETRA hosted their annual OctoberVET conference in Ballarat.
|
OctoberVET is the annual season of VET Research showcasing events to share information and ideas about VET.
|
OctoberVET events are designed and driven by local Convenors supported by AVETRA. OctoberVET complements AVETRA’s annual conference, and as the name suggests, it runs through October (with a few events usually spilling into November as well).
|

Jump for Bully Zero - Fundraising
|
|
As an organisation that receives no government funding, Bully Zero are reliant on the generosity of their supporters to raise vital awareness and funds.
|
These funds ensure that Bully Zero can deliver their educational programs across all parts of Australia, educating students, parents, teachers, apprentices / trainees, employers and the wider community on how to prevent bullying.

Minister Celebrates 2000th MIP Student to Explore Local Apprenticeship Opportunities
|
|
On Friday last week the Hon. Dan Tehan, Federal Minister for Education visited Baimbridge Secondary College in Hamilton, Victoria to celebrate the 2000th participant milestone in the Multi-Industry pilot program.
|
Westvic Staffing Solutions has partnered with a number of local secondary schools over the past two years to support students to better understand local apprenticeship and traineeship career pathways in the south west region of Victoria.
|
The program is designed to allow students to experience multiple career pathways through training, work experience and industry presentations which assists them in making a more informed choice when leaving secondary school.
|
To date the program has assisted over 2160 youth across Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania and has achieved a 40%+ success rate for youth entering into an apprenticeship upon completing the program.
|
Surprisingly almost 50% of participants changed their mind on their preferred career option from what they originally wanted to do.
|
The programs cover a wide range of industry themes including Building and Construction, Engineering and Automotive, Business and community services, and land, food and fibre.
|
“This program has engaged the community where, youth, schools and local employers have the chance to trial a range of career options to find the best fit. We congratulate the Commonwealth Government on their long term commitment to our industry, and to supporting youth into highly skilled careers” said Dean Luciani, AEN Chair and CEO of Westvic Staffing Solutions based in Warrnambool and Hamilton.
|
Gary Workman, Executive Director of AEN, also discussed the valuable work that group training organisations provide in their local communities.
|
“Australia is facing shortages of skilled workers in many areas and apprenticeships are a way of ensuring we have skilled workers for the future and that we do not leave a generation of young people permanently locked out of the workforce."
|
“We congratulate the Commonwealth government on their support of this program over the past 2 years. It strongly demonstrates the government’s commitment to apprenticeships and traineeships and will ensure our youth receive real skills and training, and valuable career opportunities, which will provide a strong foundation for our economy into the future”.

McHappy Day - Saturday 17 November 2018

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is calling on Aussies to dig deep and help put a smile on the face of seriously ill children and their families with the return of McHappy Day on Saturday 17th November.
|
As the largest fundraiser for RMHC Australia nationally, McHappy Day is crucial in raising funds for the charity, which helps keep families together while their seriously ill child undergoes treatment.
|
Since it first started in 1991, McHappy Day has raised more than $42 million for RMHC and over $4 million in 2017.
|
- Buying a Big Mac from the Macca’s near you – $2 from every Big Mac sold on McHappy Day will go directly to Ronald McDonald House Charities, and for the first time Big Macs will be available all day following the launch of McDonald’s all day menu.

Five Years of WGEA Data Shows Employer Action has Delivered Results
|
|
The Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) today released today which shows that over the last five years, employer action is improving workplace gender equality.
|
The Agency’s Director, Libby Lyons, launched the 2017-18 WGEA data at the National Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday this week.
|
The WGEA data records a steady increase in the number of women in management roles and strong growth in employer action in areas such as overall gender equality policies and strategies, pay equity and flexible work.
|
The gender pay gap has declined every year and this year has seen the biggest single-year drop (down 1.1pp) in the average full-time total remuneration gender pay gap.
|
However, the data confirms that we still have a long way to go. There are pay gaps favouring men in every industry and occupation and women earn, on average, just 79% of men’s full-time total remuneration salaries.
|
The five-year data trends also show virtually no movement in gender segregation across Australian industries and little improvement in either access to paid parental leave or the representation of women at CEO level or on boards.
|
