Adult Learners Week events took across the country recognising the importance of lifelong learning in both formal and informal settings in Australians’ lives.

This year’s theme, "Celebrate Learning Together", highlights the personal, social and professional benefits of adult education including enabling participation in further education and training, employment, and the broader community.

According to the OECD, around three million working-age Australians have low literacy or numeracy skills, impacting their ability to fully participate in work and community life, while a recent survey by the Australian Industry Group revealed nearly 90 per cent of Australian businesses are suffering productivity issues due to low levels of language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy among workers.

To mark the 30th anniversary of Adult Learners Week, Adult Learning Australia has introduced the STAR (Student Teaching and Relationship) Award, recognising outstanding adult learners who mentor and support their peers.

The August edition of the International Labour Market Update (ILMU) has been released, providing insights into workforce trends and skills shortages in Australia and selected global economies.

Drawing on recent reports from international organisations, this edition offers a comprehensive overview of the global factors influencing employment outcomes According to the International Monetary Fund, the global economy has remained steady, with international trade and investment driving activity. The World Bank expects that by 2027, the Gross Domestic Product per capita of advanced countries will approximately be at the pre-pandemic forecasts.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has identified factors such as population ageing, digital and green transitions and poor job quality in some sectors, as contributing to labour market tightness in some economies.
The August edition also features detailed labour market analyses for the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the European area, offering comparative insights into employment trends and occupational demand for these economies.

Since 2015, anyone undertaking nationally recognised training has been required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Through their USI account, students can download and share their government authenticated USI vocational education and training (VET) transcript online at no cost.

USI VET transcripts collate all nationally recognised training outcomes into a single record.
Students can use a VET transcript to:
  • apply for a job
  • apply for a credit transfer
  • demonstrate pre-requisites for future training
  • backup original documentation
  • how proof of qualifications to employers and others
  • minimise unnecessary retraining.
Students can share their VET transcript with potential employers, licensing bodies and educational institutions easily. VET transcripts can be customised and tailored to show specific training completed as well as how long it can be viewed for. It can also be shared as a physical printed copy or digitally via email, link or a QR code.

All students need to do is log in to their USI account via the USI Student Portal, follow the prompts and click share.

The information within a VET transcript has been authenticated by the Australian Government, allowing organisations to confidently confirm prior learning and reassuring employers that their prospective employee has the skills and qualifications needed for the job.

Registered Training Organisation (RTOs)

RTOs can view a student’s full copy or extract of their VET transcript with permission via the USI Organisation Portal.

RTOs can also update the student’s VET transcript training information using the USI Transcript Update Tool.

Accessing a student’s VET transcripts can help RTOs with enrolments, credit transfers, entitlement assessments or troubleshooting VET transcript queries from students.
