At this event, guests will hear from the Victorian Government on the Victorian VET system and industry leaders as they discuss their views on how Apprenticeships and Traineeships are being utilised globally as a solution to youth unemployment as well as meeting future employer workforce needs.

New SafetyFirst Video
|
Last week AEN released a new safety video aimed directly at apprentices and trainees, highlighting the OH&S performance results collected over the past 5 years.
|
|
Over the past 5 years our members have been tracking workplace accidents for their apprentices. Overall we have now collected data on over 50,000 apprentices in a wide range of trades and industries.
|
So what have the survey results shown?
|
- The greatest at risk are 1st year apprentices aged between 15-24 years of age.
- The results show that the less experienced you are the more potential for a workplace accident.
- Young male apprentices within the building and construction, engineering, automotive and electrical trades are the greatest at risk.
The main accident types over the past 5 years include:

- Lacerations (cuts) to the hands.
- Sprain and Strains to the back (manual lifting).
- Foreign objects in the eyes.
These accidents may not seem like a big deal, but they can all have serious consequences.
|
These results indicate that there are a number of simple things you could do to improve your workplace safety.
|
Take a minute to think about the job you are about to do, and to make sure you are doing it safely.
|
- Remember to always ask if you are not sure about something.
- Use the correct piece of equipment for the job.
- If you are lifting something always do it safely!
- Wear your personal protective equipment at all times - especially your safety glasses and gloves!
Always think "SafetyFirst" so you don’t become a statistic.

Nominations Open For 65th Victorian Training Awards
|
|
|
Apprentices, students, teachers, employers and training providers can now nominate for the 65th Victorian Training Awards.
|
Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, Gayle Tierney, has opened nominations for the awards this week, which recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations in the Victorian TAFE and training sector.
|
“The Victorian Training Awards don’t just celebrate success—they inspire it.”
|
“This is your opportunity to nominate an outstanding individual or organisation in the VET sector that deserves extra recognition.”
|
There are 16 categories including six for individuals, four for employers, four for training organisations as well as an Industry Collaboration Award and the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement.
|
Winners will be announced at the Victorian Training Awards gala ceremony in Melbourne in September, with winners receiving $5000 in prize money.
|
Some winners will also have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Brisbane in November.
|
|
Applications close at midnight on Friday 3 May.
|
|
|
|
|
|
The Australian Training Awards direct entry category awards are also open.
|
|
Applicants now have the opportunity to reach the national stage in Brisbane in November 2019 and gain Australia-wide recognition their outstanding practices in vocational education and training.

New Victorian Government Solar Hot Water Rebate – Opening Soon
|
The solar hot water rebate applies to installations that replace an existing hot water system that was at least three years old (from the date of purchase) and it’s not available to new build homes.
|
|
Households can only access one rebate type under the solar homes package (i.e. a household that accesses a Solar PV rebate cannot claim a solar hot water rebate and vice versa).
|
|

This week a new report sponsored by the international labour organisation and the OECD was released by the skills for employment. Future Ready Adult Learning Systems.
|
With digitalisation, deepening globalisation and population ageing, the world of work is changing. The extent to which individuals, firms and economies can harness the benefits of these changes critically depends on the readiness of adult learning systems to help people develop relevant skills for this changing world of work.
|

|
|
This report presents the key results from the Priorities for Adult Learning (PAL) Dashboard which facilitates comparisons between countries along seven dimensions of the readiness of adult learning systems to address future skill challenges. Based on the dashboard, the report highlights in which areas action is needed, and policy examples from OECD and emerging countries throughout the report illustrate how these actions could be implemented.
