G-Force and Barwon Water Recognise Local Trainees
|
|
|
On Friday last week Minister for Training and Skills and Minister for Higher Education the Hon. Gayle Tierney acknowledged the great work of G-Force and Barwon Water with their local indigenous traineeship program based in Geelong.
|
Gforce is Geelong’s largest employer of apprentices and trainees, with a strong history of working with local business to provide innovative employment opportunities.
|
As part of a new phase, Barwon Water is striving to become more diverse, high performing, innovative and connected as an organisation, working collaboratively with business and community partners to identify and deliver great regional outcomes.
|
Barwon Water and Gforce are working collaboratively to provide early career pathways through a 12 month traineeship program. Barwon Water is looking for people who are passionate about delivering results, thrive in structured work processes and enjoy clear, efficient responsibilities in their role.
|
Gforce and Barwon Water have been working in partnership since 1999 to support young people into a range of careers within the water industry. Gforce employs the trainees in a range of roles including administration, water operations, human resources, engineering technician and civil construction, the trainees are then hosted to Barwon Water for the duration of the traineeship.
|
In April 2016 Gforce and Barwon Water embarked upon a project with a focus upon people facing barriers to employment and with Aboriginal backgrounds into traineeships. Five trainees commenced the program and all successfully completed their traineeship with four out of the five being offered ongoing contract work with Barwon Water and one gaining a full time role at Deakin University.

The following year eight trainees commenced and all completed successfully.
|
In 2018 Barwon Water and Gforce together with local consultancy group Wan Yaari focused upon achieving a higher proportion of Aboriginal trainees in the program. Of the thirteen trainees who commenced, 7 were of Aboriginal origin. All 13 trainees are due to complete mid-April 2019 with another 13 trainees currently being recruited.

The traineeships range from civil construction, water treatment operations, IT and Business administration.
|
|
|

Applying for a Trade Paper Through VRQA
|
|
|
A trade paper is a certificate that commemorates the completion of an apprenticeship.
|
You can apply for a free trade paper if you have completed both:
|
- a recognised apprenticeship in Victoria, which you started after 1 January 1995
- the apprenticeship's relevant qualification with a TAFE, trade school or registered training organisation.
|
|
|
When you apply, you'll need to provide your qualification title and code. Your TAFE, trade school or registered training organisation can provide you with this information.
|
To apply for a trade paper, register an account and submit an application in the trade paper portal, which is provided by VETASSESS.
|
|
|

Recently the ATO released information to assist apprentices complete the annual taxation.
|
The information explains the various aspects of an apprenticeship and what you may be eligible to claim.
|

Victorian Government – Change of Date for State Budget
|
Last Friday the Victorian Government announced it would delay the State Budget until after the federal election.
|
The Victorian Budget will be handed down on Monday 27 May, after the federal election on 18 May.
|
The Parliament will still sit as scheduled on 30 April 2019.
|

World Health and Safety Day - 28 April

Sunday 28 April is World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day. Promote a safe and healthy workplace and plan and adapt to the future of work at your workplace.

This year, Safe Work Australia are promoting a safe and healthy future of work.
|
|
|

As digital technologies and automation become more common, employment and workplaces are changing. It’s important that with an ageing workforce and rising levels of stress—we need to plan our future workplaces and ensure we make them safe and healthy and reduce the risk of workplace injury.
|
|
|
|
Safe Work Australia also released a new report Workplace Safety Futures report that explores the future of work and the impact of emerging trends on WHS and workers’ compensation over the next 20 years.
|

This report explores whether VET undertaken by secondary students equips them with the technical and non-technical skills required to successfully participate in an ever-changing world of work.

Nominations Open For 65th Victorian Training Awards
|
|
|
Apprentices, students, teachers, employers and training providers can now nominate for the 65th Victorian Training Awards.
|
Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, Gayle Tierney, has opened nominations for the awards this week, which recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations in the Victorian TAFE and training sector.
|
“The Victorian Training Awards don’t just celebrate success—they inspire it.”
|
“This is your opportunity to nominate an outstanding individual or organisation in the VET sector that deserves extra recognition.”
|
There are 16 categories including six for individuals, four for employers, four for training organisations as well as an Industry Collaboration Award and the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement.
|
Winners will be announced at the Victorian Training Awards gala ceremony in Melbourne in September, with winners receiving $5000 in prize money.
|
Some winners will also have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Brisbane in November.
|
|
Applications close at midnight on Friday 3 May.
|
