Victorian Training Achievements Honoured at Awards Night
|
Vocational education and training students, teachers and the businesses who train them have been honoured for their outstanding achievements at the 65th Victorian Training Awards, with six women taking out top honours.
|
Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education Gayle Tierney congratulated the 14 winners at the prestigious annual event, dedicated to the state’s vocational education and training system.
|
|
“The Victorian Training Awards highlight the best-of-the-best in our TAFE and training sector and celebrate Victoria’s outstanding apprentices, trainees, students, employers, teachers and training providers.”
|
“Victoria is leading the way nationally in delivering a high-quality training and TAFE system, giving all Victorians the opportunity to develop the skills they need for the jobs they want and our state needs.”

From the moment she was knee high and could utter the word ‘vet’, Heidi Liesel Rasmussen knew it was the career path she not only wanted to go down, but had to. Work placement in a veterinary clinic led to her determination to pursue formal qualifications which she commenced while in Year 11.
|
With a number of awards already under her belt – for the highest level of achievement for a number of Year 11 subjects and Trainee of the Year from The Gordon, she’s extremely excited about what the future holds. She plans to expand her learning through TAFE for a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and university for a Bachelor’s degree.

Less than a year after doing her traineeship Daniela Feldman has emerged as a young professional doing something she loves which enables her to work for, and have a positive impact on, the wider community.
|
Daniela applied for a traineeship after finding that studying at university was not as challenging or stimulating as she’d expected. Her traineeship in the Human Resources area of the Department of Premier and Cabinet has refocused her goals and provided her with her most rewarding career experience to date.
|
Having completed her training two months earlier than predicted, Daniela has now been offered an ongoing role with the Department.

Working together towards a common vision, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Holmesglen Institute created an enriching pathway to employment for young people with disability.
|
Australia’s first Integrated Practical Placement Program is an innovative model combining industry, education and support services. Students enthusiastically perform roles that fulfil a business need and contribute to the hospital’s daily operations.
|
The program includes unpaid work placements of six months, and where possible, participants are supported to transition into paid employment.
|
Piloted in 2018, the program exemplifies how barriers can be overcome through the effective partnering of education with industry. Results to date show that 80 per cent of students gained employment, with others pursuing further studies.
|
Other highlights include the presentation of the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement, which was won by Patricia Neden for her significant contribution to the Victorian TAFE and Training system for more than 25 years.
|
Winners were selected from 39 finalists, with the winners receiving $5,000 each in prize money.
|
Winners from eligible categories will represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Brisbane in November.

Young People Don't Feel Ready for the Future of Work
|
The future of work is right here, right now and younger generations are at the front of the line, exploring new approaches, new encounters and new challenges.
In a study just released by the OECD and WorldSkills, with inputs from Education and Employers, young people were asked about their levels of awareness about the changes affecting the new world of work and how confident they feel about their ability to deal with them.
|
The results don’t paint a rosy picture for our learning systems and, while we know of great examples of young people being given the right opportunities, we need to find ways to scale up these success stories to build a more inclusive world of work.

These findings were revealed in the report by WorldSkills and the OECD, with contributions from Education and Employers entitled, “Youth Voice for the Future of Work,” which was released at the 2019 WorldSkills Conference in Kazan, Russia.
|
The report results are based on a survey conducted by OnePoll of 15,000 participants who live in 19 of the G20 nations and whose ages range from 18 to 24 years old.

Policy Brief: Measuring the Costs and Benefits of Apprenticeship Training
|
|
|
Last week the International Labour Organisation released a new policy brief, Measuring the costs and benefits of apprenticeship training - an overview of the current debate and research efforts to measure cost and benefits of apprenticeship training.
|
It introduces the methods and challenges associated with collecting data and attaching a monetary value to apprenticeships, for enterprises, learners and society.
|
|
Despite the limited number of studies that exist, the policy brief shows that apprenticeships, if of a certain quality and regulated, are not only profitable for enterprises, but significantly increase employability and employment perspectives for apprentices, and in doing so, reduce the overall risks of unemployment and therefore potential social costs.
|

WorldSkills Australia Introduce New CEO - Trevor Schwenke
|
Recently the WorldSkills Australia Board advised that after 3 years as Chief Executive Officer of WorldSkills Australia, Brett Judd, is leaving to pursue other opportunities.
|
At the Board's request, Trevor Schwenke is very pleased to assume the role of CEO for the foreseeable future and can be contacted at the WorldSkills Australia Melbourne office or via email on tschwenke@worldskills.org.au.

Most people would know that Trevor has been involved in and around WorldSkills for approximately 30 years as a volunteer.
|
It has been an incredibly exciting few weeks with the 2019 Skillaroos and Team Australia competing at the 45th WorldSkills International Competition in Kazan, Russia with over 250,000 spectators.
|
Team Australia brought home 1 Silver, 3 Bronze and 9 Medallions of Excellence and improved on its ranking from 10th in 2017 to 8th in the World (WorldSkills International Official Members Comparison Report by average medal points and average point score).
|

OECD 2019 Education at a Glance Report
|
The OECD has released its Education at a Glance 2019 report, comparing the education systems of the OECD's 36 member countries, including Australia, as well as 10 other countries.
|
On the whole, the global snapshot revealed a positive report card for Australia’s schools.
|
According to the OECD data, Australian primary and secondary students spend more time in school than almost all OECD countries – 11,000 hours in 11 years which is 3,410 hours more than the global average.
|
Australian children’s participation in formal early childhood education is also on the rise, and on par with the rest of the OECD nations.
|
|
However, Australia’s three-year-old participation rate is currently at 67%, well below the average of 79%, suggesting a greater focus on student engagement is needed for this age group.
|

- Host businesses can find that you have lodged an application on the Labour Hire Authority website.
- If a decision has not been made by 29 October 2019 then you may continue to operate until a decision is made on your licence.

Victorian ICT Traineeship Program
|
Funded by the Victorian Government, Ai Group has commenced co-ordinating a new program to increase traineeships in the ICT industry.
|
The program aims to commence 50 new traineeships by 31 December 2020 by:
|
- Working with employers to identify traineeship opportunities;
- Developing a preparatory program for 100 prospective trainees to gain an introduction to the industry and some relevant skills before commencing work; and
- Supporting the employers and trainees throughout the process (mentor and supervisor training).
This opportunity is open to all GTO’s to become involved.

New Free Resources to Assist in Designing Better Youth Employment Programs
|
|
|
Across Australia, many organisations are delivering community-led employment programs. These organisations valuably contribute to the lives of young people, however, collection and use of data is inconsistent and evidence of impact is limited.
|
Currently, there is no effective mechanism for identifying and extending good practice across the sector.
|
|
Addressing this challenge, Social Ventures Australia (SVA) has recently launched Review; a free online toolkit for organisations that deliver community-led employment programs.
|
|
|
|
Review includes surveys and tools that are designed to make it easier for organisations to design and deliver effective programs, to collect feedback from young people and make data-driven improvements to their programs over time.
|
The toolkit was developed with support from Jobs Australia, Brotherhood of St Laurence, Orygen: The National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health, VicHealth, University of Melbourne and Jesuit Social Services.
|
The toolkit identifies ten characteristics common to effective youth employment programs and resources have been developed with reference to a literature review, a review of Australian community-led employment programs and input from the sector.
|
The team at SVA is now working with community-led employment programs to test the toolkit resources and develop an online platform that will make data collection and use even easier.
|
Organisations that participate will have access to data at both an individual and program level that will allow them to track program effectiveness, drive continual improvement and to speak to potential funders and partners about their impact.
|
SVA will collate data and learnings will be extended to funders, peak bodies, policy influencers and the wider sector.
|
|

|
SVA is looking for organisations that:
|
- deliver employment programs for young people aged 16-24;
- would like to build their capability around data collection and use; and
- are delivering programs between now and May 2020

WorkSafe Victoria – Health and Safety Month Series of Information Sessions in October
|
October is National Health and Safety Month. As part of raising the awareness of OHS issues, WorkSafe Victoria is hosting a series of information sessions.
|
Seminars will be held across the state on a range of topics including;
|
- keynote presentations on mental health & wellbeing
- information on silicosis
- conversations about sexual harassment and workplace equality
- managing dangerous goods
- preventing mental injury in the workplace
- identifying stress and bullying in the workplace
- the safety of young workers
- drugs and alcohol in the workplace - how to implement testing
- occupational violence and aggression in healthcare.

NCVER Update
|
VET in Schools participation down 6.7% over past 5 years
The number of school students undertaking VET as part of their Senior Secondary Certificate of Education (SSCE) has declined over the past 5 years by 6.7%, according to new data.
Latest report VET in Schools 2018 also reveals that the number of school-based apprentices and trainees decreased to 18 200 in 2018, down 13.3% from 2014, while those undertaking other VET that contributed to their SSCE decreased to 212,500 in 2018, down 6.0% from 2014.
Tourism, travel and hospitality remains the most popular training package with 14.8% of all VET in Schools students undertaking qualifications in this training package in 2018.

Apprentice and trainee commencements up 2.2%
Latest national apprentice and trainee data show trade and non-trade commencements increased to 55,680 in the March 2019 quarter, up 2.2% on the same quarter in 2018.
Completions also increased to 22,885 in the March 2019 quarter, up 4.9% when compared with the same quarter last year.
Overall there were 276,250 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 March 2019, a decrease of 0.9% from 31 March 2018.

Victorian Portable Long Service Leave
|
Portable long service makes it fairer and easier for Victorians working in community services, contract cleaning and security to access long service benefits.
|
Victoria’s Portable Long Service Benefits Scheme allows workers to build up long service based on length of service to their industry, not length of service to one employer.
|
The Portable Long Service Authority will work closely with businesses to help them understand their obligations as employers and with workers to understand what they're entitled to.
|
