Apprenticeship Luncheon

On Thursday this week our annual apprenticeship luncheon was held at the RACV Club Melbourne. With 100 guests in attendance the event was well received with Hon. Gayle Tierney, Minister for Training and Skills, Minister for Corrections providing an update on a number of Government initiatives and programs.

The event was a great chance for many industry stakeholders to network.

The presentation by Eliane Miles from McCrindle put into sharp focus the speed of change that is occurring and how we can support individuals in the VET sector to better prepare for working life where it is estimated people starting work now will have up to 17 job changes during their and topics including:

• Continuation of Victorian and Australian population growth (natural increase combined with skilled migration) – increased multi-cultural communities

• Victoria having 6 of the 20 largest cities in the country – with an additional 1 million people by 2050

• The increase in GEN Ys becoming employers over the next 10 years

• The significant amount of Baby Boomers leaving the workforce over the next 10 years

• Young people responding to a “collaborative and contributive” leadership style

• The significant communication difference with “face-to-face” time and “screen” time.

CGU Withdraws From NSW Workers Compensastion Scheme

On 1 March 2017, CGU advised the market that it would be withdrawing from the workers compensation scheme in New South Wales by 31 December 2017.

The company outlined that this decision was based on its assessment of the commercial viability of remaining a scheme participant. As a result, CGU will not be responding to icare’s upcoming agent selection process for the 2018-2020 contract for claims management.

CGU has advised it is committed to working closely with icare and brokers to ensure a smooth transition for all involved, and offered assurances that this decision does not affect its presence in workers compensation schemes of other states and territories.

NEXT STEPS

Marsh is advised by icare that it will communicate the outcome of the tender for the 2018-2020 contract in April as planned, at which point the successful applicants for the NSW workers compensation scheme will be made known.

Marsh will provide advice following icare’s announcement when there is greater certainty of the options available for clients.

If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your Marsh client executive.

Have a go: Help for budding Aussie entrepreneurs

New products are now available to help young Australians who are starting a business for the first time, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack said earlier this week.

Coming on the back of a marked increase in young Australians going into business, particularly in industries such as construction, transport, information technology and telecommunications, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has made the process even easier to help young people have a go.

Government agencies, including the ATO, Australian Securities and Investments Commission and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, recently partnered with young small business owners to form a fix-it squad. The squad explored how Government could help young Australians starting a new business and worked together to bring some helpful new products to life.

People starting a business can download ASIC's First Business App or visit the Plan & Start page on business.gov.au for valuable information including:

• checklists to help with setting up a business

• ideas for developing business networks, and

• advice about planning and setting goals.
