Attendees will gain an in-depth grasp of the various belief systems, values, and customs of African Australians and other culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups.
This seminar incorporates substantial insights from an esteemed African elder who has fostered connections between the African and Australian communities for more than two decades.
Moreover, participants will acquire tactics that can be applied within their teams/organizations, enabling them to facilitate the growth, longevity, and assistance of job seekers from African-Australian and CALD backgrounds throughout their employment tenure.

Target audience: Managers, field officers and staff with recruitment responsibilities of African apprentices/trainees.
Learning outcomes:
- Grasping the beliefs, values, work ethics, family dynamics, cultural sensitivities, and taboos of African and other CALD communities
- Gaining expertise in managing cultural and linguistic hurdles
- Acquiring skills to adeptly interact with African-Australian & CALD communities.
- Mastering the art of engaging employees, community members, and stakeholders hailing from African-Australian & CALD backgrounds
- Discovering techniques to integrate culturally inclusive approaches into your organization’s recruitment procedures.
- Formulating strategies for nurturing, retaining, and assisting job seekers from African Australian and CALD backgrounds
About the facilitator:
Ashoup Atar is the CEO of Kowanj, a not-for-profit community-led organization that was established in response to the emerging social, educational, and employment needs of the African refugees & new and emerging communities in Australia. As an ex-refugee, Ash is committed to supporting migrant/refugees’ communities to prosper and achieve their goals. Members of the CALD communities are often disadvantaged and under-represented in the labour market therefore, Ash’s work focuses on addressing the employment barriers CALD jobseekers face and support employers promote cultural competence in the workplace, allowing jobseekers to transition effectively into their jobs.
