Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
|
|
|
Now into its 8th month, the Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program has received over 640 registrations from apprentices and trainees who have been affected by the current economic crisis. Over 210 participants have now successfully re-commenced their apprenticeship or traineeship.

First year apprentices make up over 45 percent of those seeking assistance and while regional Victoria has been affected slightly, the vast majority of participants are located in the Metro Melbourne area.

We have also seen employer confidence in the economy boost with more job vacancies being listed on last month. The register has had over 1600 job vacancies listed.
|
|
The program aims to assist apprentices and trainees who have lost their employment complete their training.
|
|
|
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost their employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO) or directly with an employer whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.
|
|
|
Employers who have job vacancies for apprentices or trainees can submit them on the vacancy register.
|
Our program officers will match your vacancy with suitable candidates for you to interview.
|
Employers may also be eligible for Australian Government incentives.
|

Thousands Of Apprentices To Join Victoria’s Big Build
|
|
|
|
Victoria’s most iconic Big Build projects will be the training ground for the state’s next generation of skilled workers under a $33.2 million investment to boost apprenticeships and traineeships.
|
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney today visited the newly operational Victorian Tunnelling Centre (VTC) to launch Big Build Apprenticeships, which will give apprentices and trainees on-the-job experience on some of the Andrews Labor Government’s biggest projects.
|
Announced as part of the Victorian Budget 2020/21, the program will create up to 1,500 new opportunities for apprentices and trainees each year, over four years.
|
TAFEs will play a central role in the program, linking students with real life training on Victoria’s major projects.
|
|
School leavers and young people including those currently undertaking or looking to begin an apprenticeship or traineeship, are encouraged to apply.
|
This program will support young people and other jobseekers, helping them get their start working as apprentices or trainees on major projects, while also supporting employers to find the right skilled workers for their business.
|
A new body, Apprenticeships Victoria, is being established to promote and connect apprentices and trainees with training organisations and employers.
|
Apprenticeships and traineeships will be created on the North East Link, New Footscray Hospital and the new Warrnambool Learning and Library Hub – with more major projects to join over time.
|
The program will initially prioritise displaced apprentices and trainees that have had their training suspended or cancelled because of the global pandemic as well as unrepresented and disadvantaged groups.
|
VTC is now officially operational and recently welcomed the first intake of workers training for city-shaping projects such as the Metro Tunnel – it was built as part of the Metro Tunnel Project’s contract with Cross Yarra Partnership.
|
The centre will create a skilled workforce for Victoria’s Big Build projects by training about 5,000 workers a year in underground construction (including tunnel boring machine operations) and maintenance.
|
The Budget includes an unprecedented investment of $1 billion to ensure Victoria has the training and skills system it needs as the state emerges from the global pandemic.

As part of a project with Microsoft GAN Global, GAN Australia, GAN NZ and GAN Columbia are undertaking a small research project to better understand the digital skills landscape and the views of young people.
|
As a first step in the project we have developed a short online digital skills survey - feel free to pass this on.
|
|
Once participants complete the survey they receive direct access to the suite of free Microsoft training courses.

Skills Reform Consultation - New Website
|
The week before Christmas saw the launch of the Department of Education, Skills and Employment's new Skills Reform website, the new home of all Skills Reform activities within Australia’s Vocational Education Training (VET) system.
|
On this website, you can register to receive updates on skills reform including opportunities to provide feedback.
|
|
The website is calling for anyone who is an "employer, employee, business owner, learner, apprentice, job seeker, peak body, union, employer association or Registered Training Organisation (RTO)" to provide their feedback on the VET sector.
|
|

Mary-Anne Thomas Joins The Victorian Government Cabinet
|
|
On the 22nd of December 2020, the Victorian Government confirmed Mary-Anne Thomas had been sworn in as a member of Cabinet.
|
Stepping into the big shoes of Jill Hennessy as Victoria’s new Attorney-General is Jaclyn Symes.
|
Not only does Jaclyn have the necessary skills and background, she has a fierce commitment to carry on the work of reforming our justice system that makes her right for this role.
|
She will also continue in her responsibilities as Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council and Minister for Resources.
|
Sonya Kilkenny will serve as our new Cabinet Secretary.
|

The Victorian Labor Hire Authority Is Contacting Providers With Overdue Annual Reporting
|
Most labour hire providers lodge their annual reporting by the due date, however a small number of providers have overdue annual reporting.
|
|
These providers are being contacted by the Authority to remind them to comply with their obligations and to lodge their annual reporting.
|
Annual reporting helps the Authority monitor and enforce compliance, ensures the Authority has current information to better understand providers, and improves the transparency of the labour hire industry.
|
Providers who fail to lodge annual reporting will be issued a notice to comply and may face licence conditions, suspension or cancellation.
|
If you have any problems lodging your report on time, please contact the Authority before your reporting period ends to discuss your individual circumstances.

To help licensed providers collect the information and supporting documents needed to complete their annual reporting, the Authority has published an annual reporting guide and checklist.
|
For most providers annual reporting is short and simple.
|
|
In developing the annual reporting process, the Authority considered feedback from the labour hire licence application process and made annual reporting more straightforward and easier to use.
|
