The AEN is excited to be holding this year's Mid-Year Conference in Geelong. Over one and half days, conference guests will hear from representatives of the Commonwealth and Victorian Government. The AEN will also provide an update on current projects and services. This year’s event promises to be jammed packed with a range of topics and updates.

Training for the Job You Want: New Victorian Skills Authority

Victorians will be able to access the training they need for the jobs they want as the Victorian Labor Government makes a $383.8 million investment in skills, training and higher education in the Victorian Budget 2021/22.

A new skills authority headlines a range of initiatives designed to strengthen the quality of teaching and training, provide affordable accredited training to more Victorians, and improve pathways for skilled workers.

The $85.9 million Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) will ensure all Victorians can access the training they need to find a good, secure job. Building on the work of the Skills Commissioner, this investment will further drive innovation across the VET sector, delivering better planning for Victoria’s future training needs and providing an integrated approach to the quality of teaching and training.

It will also lead the development of an annual Victorian Skills Plan to better guide our state’s training delivery. The VSA is expected to be launched in July 2021 and is a key response to the recommendations in Skills for Victoria’s Growing Economy led by former Federal Minister Jenny Macklin.

An investment of $88.8 million will provide subsidised VET to eligible students, including continuing the successful Asylum Seeker VET program, to improve people’s skills and job opportunities as they build their new life in Victoria. This will deliver up to an extra 12,200 training places, 7,400 of which are at TAFEs.

The Victoria Government will also ensure TAFEs and training providers are properly funded to deliver high quality training with a $99.2 million boost to funding rates.

The Budget also includes $72.4 million to upgrade TAFE campuses as part of the Building Better TAFEs Fund, including:
  • $60 million to redevelop the Bendigo Kangan Institute Broadmeadows campus; and
  • $10.7 million to redevelop the GOTAFE Archer Street Shepparton campus.
A further $12 million will make sure our TAFEs have the modern equipment and tools they need to teach apprentices and trainees, such as mobile cranes and 3D metal printers.

A boost of $14.9 million means support for placement officers to better coordinate mandatory practical placements for TAFE students in areas such as allied health, community services and early childhood, education and training. A new Office of TAFE Coordination and Delivery will be established in DET to enhance collaboration across the TAFE network.

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community

This year's theme is Heal Country, heal our nation.

Country is inherent to our identity.

It sustains our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally.

It is more than a place.

This week, Maggie-Jean Douglas - a Gubbi Gubbi artist from South East Queensland – was awarded the winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC poster competition for 2021.

This program has now supported over 770 participants since May 2020, and almost 290 apprentices and trainees have commenced with a new employer.

For Individuals

Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.

Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer, whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.

National Careers Week is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia which aims to celebrate careers, career development, its services and development practitioners as well as promoting the economic, social and personal benefits of career development.

WorkSafe Victoria - WorkWell Toolkit

WorkWell Toolkit hits 10,000 Users

Victorian employers are being urged to join the more than 10,000 now using WorkSafe's free online resources to improve the mental wellbeing of their workers.

The WorkWell Toolkit provides a step-by-step approach to help workplace leaders promote positive mental health and prevent mental injury by using tools and information tailored to their individual business.

Launched in July 2018, the Toolkit has now reached the 10,000th user milestone after the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre signed up, joining workplaces of all sizes across 18 industries already taking part.

Once registered, employers can access customised, practical resources such as case studies, policy examples, videos, tip sheets and templates covering the work-related factors that impact mental health.

Australian Training Awards - 18 November 2021

The Australian Training Awards (the Awards) recognise and celebrate outstanding achievements in the vocational education and training sector.

The Awards commenced in 1994. Over this time many individuals, businesses, and registered training organisations have been rewarded for showcasing best practice in VET.

The Awards are held annually in November in a different state or territory. The 2021 the Awards will be held in Perth Western Australia on Thursday 18 November.

Sixteen awards categories will be presented at the Awards in Perth—eight categories are individual achievements and eight for businesses and registered training organisations.

Eleven awards are entered into the Awards through the state and territory training awards process with winners from each state and territory becoming eligible to compete at the national level in aligned categories. Other awards are entered directly to the Awards.

The Awards presentation event coincides with Finalist Week where participants are required to participate in the Finalist Week program which may include the judging interview as well as the opportunity to establish networks with fellow category finalists from around Australia. Finalists will also participate in professional development activities to prepare them for their role as a national ambassador for the VET sector.

As an award winner/runner up, finalists will be recognised nationally as a leader in their field of study, training or a national leader in skills, training and workforce development. Winners in certain categories receive $5,000 in prize money, and runner-ups receive $2,500 prize money.

VRQA Update

Apprenticeships and Traineeships Expanded to Asylum Seekers


New policy advice from Apprenticeships Victoria allows VRQA, in certain circumstances, to approve apprenticeships and traineeships for people on temporary visas.

It is now possible for people on refugee and humanitarian visas to undertake apprenticeships and traineeships in Victoria. This includes Temporary Protection visas, Safe Haven Enterprise visas and related bridging visas.

To determine eligibility, VRQA will now consider the likelihood of a visa extension or early completion when registering training contracts. They have applied this change to all training contract registrations from 1 January 2021.

DET - Employer Satisfaction Survey


The Department of Education and Training's (DET's) Employer Satisfaction Survey is an opportunity for employers to help shape the Victorian training and TAFE system. If you employed an apprentice or trainee who attends or has recently graduated from a registered training organisation (RTO), the survey is your chance to let VRQA know how satisfied you are with the training they received.

DET uses your insights to improve Victoria's RTO system. Communicating with employers and industry helps make sure Victorians get a quality education, and that Victorian businesses have the teams they need to succeed.

NCVER Update

This research summary brings together findings using primarily international country comparisons on industry's role in VET over the last decade.

Industry representation and governance in the VET sector have undergone several transformations in the past and continue to do so in the present.

Social partnerships negotiated between governments, employers, unions, and training providers, where each partner is highly valued and willing to take responsibility for their part, is the key to effective VET governance and, ultimately, improve outcomes for learners.
