NAIDOC Week: 4 - 11 July 2021

NAIDOC week
The NAIDOC 2021 theme for 2021 is – Heal Country! – which calls for all of us to continue to seek greater protections for our lands, our waters, our sacred sites and our cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

Country that is more than a place and inherent to our identity.

Country that we speak about like a person, sustaining our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally.

NAIDOC 2021 invites the nation to embrace First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

Victorian Labour Hire Authority Annual Reporting Guide and Checklist

To help licensed providers collect the information and supporting documents needed to complete their annual reporting, the VLHA have published an annual reporting guide and checklist.

For most providers, annual reporting is short and simple. In developing the annual reporting process, VLHA considered providers' feedback from the labour hire licence application process and made annual reporting more straightforward and easier to use.

What is annual reporting?

Licensed labour hire providers must report every 12 months on their labour hire activities for the previous 12 months, as a condition of their licence. Failure to comply with a licence condition may result in a significant fine with a maximum penalty for a natural person of $36,348 or $145,392 for a corporation, or the licence being suspended, cancelled, or varied.

For further details, please visit Guide to Annual Reporting.

Magpie Next Generation Project

Magpie Next Gen photo 30062021 V2
The Magpie Next Generation Project, funded through the Australian Government’s Local Recovery Fund, commenced its first cohort of participants this week. At the Collingwood Football Club’s Holden Centre, the group have bonded, shared stories and collaborated on projects during their employability skills training sessions. Driving lots of interaction and engagement, trainer, Anthony Tsonis featured activities addressing a sense of purpose and goal setting to embed a strong foundation from which to work.

Asuria are working alongside the Collingwood Football Club to secure job placements for the participants as they exit the program and industry skills training will be provided dependent on the roles attained.

Today, the Social Inclusion Advisor at John Holland is having lunch with the group to discuss the construction industry, and on Monday 5 July he will present to the group on job opportunities and the West Gate Tunnel project.

Frontline HR will visit next week to raise civil construction job openings on offer and potentially First Nations Traffic will address the group to discuss traffic control opportunities.

A mini graduation is planned for the end of the course with employers to attend with the view to engage participants.

If any GTO has construction, civil or traffic control openings, please contact Melissa Kalemis at melissa@aen.org.au or Carmel Veenstra at carmel@aen.org.au who will refer to Asuria for interviews with project participants.

World Youth Skills Day: 15 July 2021

World youth skills day
World Youth Skills Day 2021 will again take place in a challenging context due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

UNESCO estimates that schools were either fully or partially closed for more than 30 weeks between March 2020 and May 2021 in half the countries of the world.
In late June 2021, 19 countries still had full school closures, affecting nearly 157 million learners, and 768 million more learners were affected by partial school closure

Respondents to a survey of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions jointly collected by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank reported that distance training had become the most common way of imparting skills, with considerable difficulties regarding, among others, curricula adaptation, trainee and trainer preparedness, connectivity, or assessment and certification processes.

ILO estimates show that globally, youth employment fell 8.7 per cent in 2020, compared with 3.7 per cent for adults, with the most pronounced fall seen in middle-income countries. The consequences of this disruption to the early labour market experiences of youth could last for years.

World Youth Skills Day 2021 will pay tribute to the resilience and creativity of youth through the crisis. Participants will take stock of how TVET systems have adapted to the pandemic and recession, think of how those systems can participate in the recovery, and imagine priorities they should adopt for the post-COVID-19-world.

WorkSafe Introduces Better Support for Workers with a Mental Injury

From 1 July 2021, new legislation will enable Victorian workers and volunteers who suffer from a work-related mental injury to access early treatment and support while they await the outcome of their claim. Payment for this support is called provisional payments.

Victorian workers can now access early treatment and support for up to 13 weeks, while they await the outcome of their mental injury claim. This support is called provisional payments.

This includes general practitioner (GP) visits, psychologist and psychiatrist appointments, and medication for mental injuries, ahead of a claim being accepted or not.

Provisional payments aim to provide early support for workers with a mental injury to improve their recovery and return to work outcomes.

For further information, please visit Victoria's New Provisional Payments for Work Related Mental Injuries.
