WorldSkills Australia National Championships - Still to go Ahead!

worldskills image
Apprentices, trainees and students from around the nation will showcase their talents at the 2021 WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show, with the event moving to accommodate travel restrictions by introducing satellite sites around the country.

The competition’s format has been adapted to ensure the event goes ahead, with the championships originally set to bring apprentices, trainees and students from every state to WA from 26 – 28 August.

Competitors from states like New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland will now be able to participate from their home state, competing in a series of exciting challenges for a chance to win gold, silver or bronze and become Australia’s national champion in their chosen skill.

Thousands of school children are already registered to attend the championships at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, giving them the opportunity to explore the large array of careers available in the VET sector. Members of the public can also be part of the excitement and can register to attend!

National Skills Week: 23 - 29 August

National skills week
Now moving into its eleventh year, National Skills Week 2021 is inviting Australians to 'RETHINK' their ideas of what vocational education and training (VET) is all about and the role it can have in preparing people for the future of work, especially in a post-pandemic economy.

This comes with the 2021 Federal Budget that emphasises the necessity for training in high demand sectors as well as new careers as the Australian Government and State Governments attempt to drive down unemployment and rebuild the economy.
Held annually, the vision of National Skills Week is to raise awareness on the diversity of careers which can be realised through vocational education and training, the skills for an economically viable future, and the incredible range of new jobs and skills in demand for the future.

For further information, please visit National Skills Week.

National Skills Commission - Similarity of VET Courses Across and Within Training Packages in Australia

NatSkills Comm image
This week, the National Skills Commission released a paper that analysed the similarity of VET courses across and within training packages in Australia. This analysis employed natural language processing to calculate similarity scores for each national VET qualification to all other qualifications across all training packages.
Explore the searchable dashboard to search for a qualification and see other similar qualifications, ranked in similarity from very high, to high, moderate and low.

Putting Gender Equality at the Heart of Victorian TAFE

This week, Minister Gayle Tierney launched an Australian-first guide to gender equality and respect which will be rolled-out across Victorian TAFEs.

The Respect and Equality in TAFE guide, includes written and visual resources that work alongside a dedicated website, encouraging TAFEs to create change by implementing equality action plans, fostering female leadership, encouraging female students to enrol in non-traditional courses and supporting staff to identify and respond to incidents on-campus.

Teachers at Melbourne Polytechnic, which was one of six TAFEs involved in the pilot, have already developed a project for VCAL students to reflect on their own values and behaviours relating to family violence and prevention.

The initiative responds to key recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence. A national version is currently under development.

For further information on the full suite of government initiatives on building a safe and strong gender equality system in Victoria, please visit Victorian Gender Equality Strategy.

NCVER Update

Government-funded students and courses 2020

The latest NCVER report shows there were 1.2 million students participating in Government-funded VET.

In 2020, 1 141 300 students were enrolled in Government-funded nationally recognised VET. The majority of these students, 77.8%, were undertaking training package qualifications.

Compared with 2019, considerable changes were observed in 2020 in the number of students enrolled in:
  • training package skill sets (up 215.6%)
  • locally developed skill sets comprised of at least one nationally recognised subject (up 65.6%)
  • stand-alone nationally recognised subjects (down 22.2%).

NCVER_impact_covid_ind_innovation
This report highlights findings from three industry case studies: manufacturing; healthcare (including aged care and pharmacy); and hospitality and tourism.

By examining the different ways these industries responded to the pandemic and the extent to which innovation was an element of their response, most businesses reported they adapted to changing conditions during the pandemic, rather than innovated.
