Australian Industry and Skills Committee - Industry 4.0 Industry Reference Committee

aisc-industry-4-diagram
The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) will establish an Industry 4.0 Industry Reference Committee (IRC) to help ensure vocational education and training gives students the future-focussed skills they will need as workplaces become radically transformed by increased automation and digitalisation.

The Industry 4.0 IRC will work with industry to identify the competencies students need in areas such as big data, supply chains, automation, digital skills and cyber security. These competencies could then be included in a range of qualifications across the national training system.
“Australia stands to gain from new technological breakthroughs but only if we prepare people for the skills and knowledge to help them move between jobs and to transition to new and emerging ones,” said AISC Chair, John Pollaers.

Industry 4.0 is also known as the fourth industrial revolution and describes the profound change that artificial intelligence, increased digitalisation, robotics, advances in data exchange and other new technologies will bring to manufacturing and the economy more generally.

The Industry 4.0 IRC will be made up of industry leaders with expertise in areas such as advanced manufacturing, ICT, transport and logistics and engineering.

Global Money Week 'Money Matters Matter'

Teaching our youth about money is a great investment in their future. In a world where we use credit cards and online shopping to buy the things we need, and internet banking to move our money around, it can be hard for young people to see the relationship between earning, spending and saving.

Parents and teachers play a vital role in helping youth understand the value of money and how to manage it. Global Money Week (12 - 18 March 2018) is the perfect time to use ASIC's MoneySmart resources to help you talk to the kids in your life about money matters.

What is Global Money Week?

Global Money Week is an international campaign that promotes awareness of money and the importance of financial capability. Every year schools, organisations and communities around the world take action to give people the tools they need to shape their financial future.

The theme of this year's campaign is 'Money Matters Matter'. Visit the Global Money Week website for more information.

The week communicates the emerging trends and new growth drivers connecting skills training with job outcomes.

National Skills Week 2018 will extend the message by adopting Real Skills for Real Careers as the theme for 2018.

Making Long Service Leave Fairer

The new Long Service Leave Act, which will be debated in Victorian Parliament this week, will stop women and parents being discriminated against and losing hard earned long service leave.
Currently, the Long Service Leave Act treats parental leave less favourably than all other forms of leave. If an employee takes more than 12 months unpaid parental leave they lose continuity of service, and any accrued long service leave entitlements.

This undervalues the vital contributions parents make to their workplaces – particularly women, who are disproportionately affected by this unfair and outdated arrangement.

Under the Victorian Government’s proposed changes, any period of paid parental leave and up to 12 months of unpaid parental leave will count as service, and no amount of parental leave will break continuity of service.

The new laws also provide greater flexibility in how long service leave can be taken, reducing the minimum period for long service leave to one day, giving employees greater flexibility – particularly when transitioning to retirement.

The laws will also allow workers to apply for leave after seven years’ service – as soon as long service leave entitlements begin accruing – rather than after 10 years.
