Global Apprenticeship Network Conference Wrap-Up

Thank you for your support and participation with the recent Future of Apprenticeships conference.
|
The conferences in Melbourne and Auckland were attended by over 170 delegates, with 32 speakers from 6 countries with the aim of sharing perspectives from Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia striving for excellence in apprenticeships. Guests included Minister for Training and Skills Hon. Brendan O’Connor who officially opened the conference.
|
Connecting like-minded international collaborators, government stakeholders, industry participants, group training organisations and educational institutions to build stronger relationships and areas for future collaboration.
|
The aims of the conference were to:
|
- Critically examine and reimagine the current apprenticeship system in Australia, drawing on successful experiences in Switzerland and New Zealand
- Ensure that people that take up apprenticeships in Australia achieve success in their chosen field
- Explore best practice, policies and programs that can future proof our current skills supply and manage the varying demands on our labour market
- Stimulate industry interest to engage with new and innovative apprenticeships that will meet our future economic needs and explore opportunities to develop the industry leaders of tomorrow
As part of the Auckland conference 17 Australian delegates also visited a number of New Zealand government agencies to better understand the current New Zealand VET reform.

The following activities have been identified by the conference organising committee as potential further work the organisations would like to follow up on:

- Investigate and establish apprentice exchange / mobility programs for apprentices and VET practitioners between Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia
- Establish future opportunities to bring together other VET/ Apprenticeship stakeholders through conferences/ and other events to expand the knowledge and capability of the sector
Research themes that the GAN could explore further and partner with industry stakeholder include:

- What is a quality employer / apprenticeship
- What support is needed to enable greater inclusion & diversity
- Perceptions on apprenticeships, career decision making
- School to work transitions
- Apprenticeship data on completions / university completions / long term career paths / where do they go?
- What employers are doing to support apprentices / how engaged are employers with the VET systems
- Employer supervisor skills and training needs
- Continue the conference organising committee as a “Future of Apprenticeships” steering committee
GAN Australia will re-establish our local steering committee (now that COVID-19 has subsided) with Quarterly meetings. Employers, Governments, VET Researchers and industry stakeholders are welcome to join the group.

Over the next 3 months the organising committee will prioritise the above activities and develop an action plan to identify other potential stakeholders and commence work.
|
It is envisaged that a “Future of Apprenticeships” committee will annually report on the progress of this work to the Global Apprenticeship Network.
|

Youth Mental Health First Aid
Mental health first aid is the help provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis.
|
The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.
|
Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs authorised by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by MHFA instructors across Australia.
|

Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
This in-depth Indigenous cultural awareness training provides a thorough understanding of Australian Aboriginal history, government policies and their impacts on Aboriginal society.

Indigenous Cultural Connections Pty Ltd has an open, non-threatening training style and is welcoming of attendees to ask those ‘uncomfortable’ or ‘taboo’ questions related to Aboriginal culture without fear of offence or judgement.
|

African Cultural Awareness & Recruitment
Participants will gain an understanding of African beliefs, values, work/family values and how to work with African communities. |
The 2023 Skills Conference is being held in Sydney on 14th June.
|
This annual event is hosted by the Apprentice Employment Network discusses various issues relating to apprenticeships and traineeships in 2023.

Victorian Training Awards Nominations Now Open
|
|
This week, the Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, the Hon. Gayle Tierney MP announced the opening of the 2023 Victorian Training Awards.
In 2023, the Victorian Training Awards mark their 69th year of celebrating the outstanding achievements of apprentices, students, teachers, employers and training providers in the VET sector.
Last year’s awards honoured the achievements of many outstanding organisations and individuals, with six Victorian representatives going on to achieve national success at the Australian Training Awards.
Gayle Tierney MP invites you to nominate those who deserve recognition for their exceptional efforts in the VET sector.

You may want to nominate yourself, your students, your organisation, or someone else you know.
|
Be recognised for your hard work in 2023!
Award winners will be announced at a gala ceremony on Friday 18 August and will receive $5,000 in prize money and a trophy.
|
Winners in select categories will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Tasmania in November.
Winners will also receive exposure that comes with winning such a prestigious award, a boost in confidence and heightened profile for their brand or career aspirations.
Aside from winning an Award, the nomination process itself is an important opportunity to reflect on the highlights of your learning journey and to celebrate your successes.
Nominations are now open and close on midnight on Friday 12 May. There will be no extensions beyond this date.

NCVER Employer Survey
|
|
First conducted in 2005, this Australia wide biennial survey will interview over 6000 employers across all industries and business sizes in 2023.
|
The survey collects information on whether:
|
- Organisations have jobs that require formal vocational qualifications.
- Organisations have apprentices and trainees.
- Employees have undertaken any other nationally recognised training, or unaccredited training.
The survey began in late February and runs through until mid-June 2023.
|
NCVER will send a letter to all selected employers to inform them about the survey and encourage their participation.
|
|
Results from the 2023 survey will be publicly available from the NCVER Portal in November 2023.
|
|

AATIS 2023 Information Sessions
|
|
|
|
AATIS’ in-person information sessions have returned!
|
|
|
|
AATIS will be visiting each Australian state and territory throughout 2023. AATIS first stops are at Melbourne and Geelong in Victoria.
|
These sessions present a great opportunity to learn about AATIS and the AAPathways website, including an array of information and resources for industry stakeholders.
|
AATIS will also cover some of the data trends occurring in the Australian Apprenticeships industry. The first stops are Melbourne and Geelong in Victoria

NCVER Update
|
|
Government-funded VET enrolments decrease.
|
The latest NCVER statistical report shows that in the first nine months to 30 September 2022, 1,055,585 students were enrolled in government-funded VET, a decrease of 6.1% from the same period in the previous year.
|
|
A total of 1,026,450 of these students were enrolled in nationally recognised VET, down 6.4% from the same period in 2021.
|
|
Enrolments in non-nationally recognised VET totalled 52,200, a decrease of 5.8% from January to September 2021.
|
|
Overall, there were 1,245,845 government-funded program enrolments in Australia, down 5.6% from the same period in 2021.

Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 920 participants have been supported to date.
|
|
|
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once registered, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer.
|
|
