On Tuesday 12 October, the Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, Gayle Tierney, announced the membership of the Victorian Skills Authority (VSA) Advisory Board.
|
About the VSA Advisory Board
|
The VSA Advisory Board will provide independent advice to the Minister and the VSA CEO on:
|
- long-term strategic direction
- maximising outcomes from the State’s investment in the training and skills sector
- strategic input into reforms in response to industry and community needs
- the relevance, quality and equity of the Victorian training system. This may include reviews or reports at the request of the Minister
- Ensuring the Victorian Skills Plan takes into account current and future needs
- delivery of the skills and training requirements to support government priority workforces
- the VSA’s 4 workstreams:
- data analysis and insights
- statewide and local problem-solving
- quality
- skills development and innovation, including strategic advice to the VSA CEO on the VSA workplan
- any other matters referred by the Minister.
The Advisory Board reflects the range of skills development needs across Victoria. Each member brings unique experience and expertise. This will help shape strategies for Victoria to adapt to the changing skilling needs of industry and the community.

Victoria State Training Awards: Saturday 16 October
|

The Victorian Training Awards is going online from 7pm on Saturday 16 October as the 2021 Awards celebrate the sector’s ongoing commitment, resilience and innovation in a year of challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
|
The virtual gala will be hosted in a studio with all finalists to tune in live for recognition and the announcement of each award winner.

WorldSkills Conference: 25-29 October 2021

The WorldSkills Conference "Road Ahead: Skills for a Resilient Future" is a hybrid event both online and live from Shanghai. Superannuation Changes – Super Stapling, Free Webinars
|
Superannuation has an ever-changing regulatory landscape. Introduced as part of the recent 'Your Future, Your Super' federal government measures, super stapling applies from 1 November 2021 with employers required to play a key part.
|
The introduction of super stapling means people working in Australia will be attached to one super fund for life unless they choose otherwise. The measure aims to reduce the number of super accounts people may acquire throughout their working life.
|
The introduction of super stapling makes it even more important for employees to actively choose a super fund best suited to their circumstances and needs. Making informed choices about super reduces the potential to be ‘stapled’ to a fund that may not lead to the best retirement outcome.
|

What employers need to do from 1 November
|
To help employers understand more about the extra step as a result of this legislation, Australian Super are running live webinars to explain super stapling and the impacts for employers.
|
These webinars are designed specifically for employers, to provide information about super stapling and the steps required once it comes into effect. There will also be an opportunity for a short Q&A session at the conclusion of the webinar.

HSRs can make a real difference in achieving better health and safety outcomes in workplaces. In addition to understanding the legislative and regulatory responsibilities in regards to consulting with staff, businesses can also find out the economic benefits of engaging effectively with their HSRs.

Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
|
This program has now supported over 840 participants since May 2020, and 345 apprentices and trainees have commenced with a new employer.
|
|
|
|
Currently, there are 42 participants on our active caseload:
|
- Electrical - 20
- Plumbing - 7
- Carpentry - 7
- Other trades - 8
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer, whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.
|
|
|
|

Research report: VET for secondary school students: insights and outcomes
|
This week, NCVER released VET for secondary school students (VfSSS): insights and outcomes which reports on findings that students undertake VET at school for a range of reasons but mostly to gain a qualification and find full-time employment after school.
This research examines the merits of VfSSS in preparing students for work or further training from the different perspectives of students, parents, industry, and employers.
Case studies of schools that have been identified as providing successful VET programs for transitioning secondary school students from school to work and further education and training find that one size cannot fit all. Schools, as well as education and training systems, must decide on the approaches that will best suit their school communities and geographic and industry profiles.
