Labour Hire Authority’s Annual Report

The Labour Hire Authority’s (LHA) recently released Annual Report shows a crackdown on dodgy operators, strict reviews of licence applications and a significant take up of the labour hire licensing scheme to:
  • improve the transparency and integrity of the labour hire industry
  • prevent the exploitation of labour hire workers by their providers and hosts.
The report shows that LHA assessed and reviewed 2,435 labour hire licences and applications. Of these, the LHA granted 2,030 labour hire licences, bringing the total number of licenced labour hire providers in Victoria to 5,139 as at 30 June 2021.
LHA report
The LHA also refused nine applications and cancelled 95 licences. Many refusals and cancelations followed investigations related to issues including workplace and other laws.

NCVER Update

From industry expert to educator: new research report and FREE webinar

There is consensus that the Australian VET sector faces several workforce issues including the ageing of VET practitioners, the high level of casualisation, the need to maintain industry currency and how to increase the capacity of trainers.

The availability, knowledge and experience of industry experts provide great potential for adding value to the VET workforce and addressing critical shortages to ensure the sector has the capacity to meet workforce development needs, particularly post-pandemic.

The research explores strategies to attract industry experts to become, and remain, VET practitioners.

A FREE webinar will be held on 8 December 2021, 2:00 PM ACDT where findings from the research will be discussed. On the panel are:
  • Dr Darryl Dymock and Dr Mark Tyler from Griffith University
  • Mr Ian Curry from the Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union
  • Ms Michelle Circelli from NCVER
Register here for the webinar.

Government funding of VET increases in response to COVID-19 pandemic

The latest NCVER report shows that Government funding appropriations for VET increased by over 20% to $7.7b in 2020 compared to the previous year, as Governments responded to widespread disruptions to the labour market caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Governments’ investment in assistance for employers increased by 142.9% in 2020, compared with the previous year, to just under $1.5 billion, largely driven by the Supporting Apprentices and Trainees initiative introduced in 2020.

Funds distributed totalled $7.5b, an increase of 17.5% compared with 2019.

Government funding of VET 2020 provides an insight into the flow of funding in the public VET sector, what is funded, and how it is distributed.

VCCI – Apprentice Mental Health Workshop

Mental Health apprentices
Apprentices are particularly vulnerable to experiencing poor mental health, as Australian data on the higher prevalence of mental illness in young people clearly demonstrates.

Supporting apprentices who may be struggling as well as managing mental health risks in the workplace are positive things you can focus on to ensure good outcomes for both your apprentices and your business.

If you employ apprentices and want to improve mental health in your workplace, join VCCI's last FREE interactive workshop where they will talk through the issues that matter most to both senior leaders and frontline managers.
  • Thursday 9 December, 9:00am - 12:30pm
For further details, please visit Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
