Supporting Women in Solar

The Victorian Government is boosting the number of women in the solar industry with new training and support measures – ensuring women are part of Victoria’s transition to a clean, cheap and reliable energy future.
Minister for Solar Homes Lily D’Ambrosio this week announced subsidised apprenticeships, professional mentoring, and access to ongoing education to lift the number of women participating in the renewables industry thanks to the $11 million Growing our Clean Energy Workforce package.

Women are significantly under-represented in solar, making up less than one per cent of electricians, plumbers, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, solar designers and installers, and licensed electrical inspectors.

The Victorian Government will subsidise 50 per cent of the cost of new apprenticeships to help women enter the industry and provide apprentices a tool allowance along with six-monthly incentive payments.

Group training organisations Ai Group Apprentice & Training Centre and Apprenticeships Group Australia will manage the apprenticeships.

For women working in related energy industries, free or low-cost training delivered by registered training organisations will be available to help transition to clean energy or to upskill in renewables.

The package also includes targeted support from industry group Tradeswomen Australia for women working in, entering or thinking of entering the solar industry through access to online workshops, conversational information sessions promoting a career in solar, and professional mentoring.

In addition to targeted supports to increase the participation of women, the Growing our Clean Energy Workforce package offer programs to upskill women and men already working in clean energy, as well as targeted safety and mental health first aid training.

For further information on training and support opportunities, visit Solar Victoria.

Addressing Automotive Shortages

automotive apprentices
The Australian car park is growing, but dealerships and workshops are struggling to find the trained employees they need to sell, service, and support those vehicles. Skilled migration is one answer to this issue, but locally we also need to grow the pool of apprentices coming into the automotive industry.

Recognising the importance of this issue, the AAAA, AADA and MTAQ have come together to take action on the skills shortage. They have contracted ACA Research to conduct a survey with automotive apprentices across Australia into their experiences. Insights from this research will be used to identify and promote solutions that can ultimately ensure more apprentices enter the automotive trade.

If you have any apprentices, please ask them to to scan the QR code or visit the following link, ACA Research - Skills Survey to complete the survey. It will only take 15 minutes, and there is the chance of winning a number of prizes.

If you have any questions about the research, please contact the ACA project team at AutoSkillsSurvey@acaresearch.com.au.

NCVER Update

VET as a re-engagement pathway for early school leavers
This research examined the factors that influence young people who left school before completing Year 12 to re-engage with education. It analysed data from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY).

Many early school leavers are opting for vocational education and training (VET) to complete their education and learn the skills they need to get a job. About 75% of the survey respondents who left school before completing Year 12 re-engaged with some form of education. About 63% re-engaged with education through VET.

Parents are a strong influence in encouraging early school leavers to re-engage with education, especially through VET. Early school leavers with parents or guardians who had VET aspirations for them were more likely to take that step in their education and career pathway.

Latest VET data on equity groups
The latest report provides a summary of the participation, achievement and outcomes of students from various equity groups who undertook nationally recognised VET delivered by RTOs during 2020.

It shows how each equity group is faring in VET compared with their non-equity peers and is supported by comprehensive data tables.

The equity groups featured are: people with disability; Indigenous people; those from low socioeconomic areas; those from a non-English speaking background; those living in remote and very remote areas; and those not employed. These groups have historically been disadvantaged in accessing and benefitting from education in Australia.

To access the full report, please visit NCVER.
