Cultural Diversity Week: 19-27 March

Multiculturalism is a core part of the Victorian identity, our character and way of life. As home to people from all corners of the world, Victoria is a place where anyone can contribute and belong.
|
|
|
|
|
Cultural Diversity Week invites us to reconnect, share and express ourselves creatively through this year’s theme; ‘Connecting Through Culture’. Through in-person events and activities, Victorians are invited to share their stories, and celebrate the best of what a multicultural society has to offer.
|
|
|
|
Victorians are also invited to reflect on the day that paved the way for Cultural Diversity Week. March 21 is the United Nation's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day reminds us that while celebrating multiculturalism is vital, so too is supporting and advocating on behalf of multicultural communities. While racism exists, the Victorian Government is committed to using their voice to work with and for communities to see it eliminated.

WorldSkills Australia – 2022 Regional Competitions Launch
|
|
|
On Thursday evening this week, WorldSkills Australia launched the regional competitions for 2022. Best of luck to all the apprentices and trainees over the coming months.
|
|
A reminder that the next national competition will be held in Melbourne during National Skills Week in August 2023.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Nominations Now Open for the Victorian Training Awards
|
|
|
|
Outstanding individuals and organisations in the TAFE and training sector can now be nominated for the Victorian Training Awards 2022.
|
The prestigious event is now in its 68th year and recognises the achievements of apprentices, students, teachers, employers and training providers.
|
There are six award categories for individuals, three for employers and four for training organisations as well as the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Industry Collaboration Award and a People’s Choice Award.
|
Winners will receive $5000 prize money and winners in some categories will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Adelaide in November.
|
Applications close at midnight on Saturday, 21 May 2022 and winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Melbourne in September.
|

Budget Announcement – New Program for Youth - ReBoot
|
This week, Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced a new program that will be officially announced as part of the budget. Young people who lack basic skills to make their way in the world will be targeted with a $46.8 million investment to try and get 5000 of them into education or work.
|
This month’s budget is set to include a new pre-employment program called ReBoot aimed at young people aged between 15 and 24 who lack the discipline and motivation to benefit from existing programs. The aim is to develop their capability and sense of self-worth to enable them to undertake further education or an apprenticeship. ReBoot, will be particularly targeted at young people who have experienced family violence or the youth justice system.
|
It is hoped participants in the scheme will later be able to join other programs such as Youth Jobs PaTH, which aims to increase employability, skills training and work experience, and Transition to Work which offers intensive support for youth at risk of long-term unemployment.
|

Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business and Acting Minister for
|
Education and Youth, Stuart Robert, said having a positive attitude to work and demonstrated reliability were the highest priority for employers looking to hire entry-level jobs.
|
“Young people who do not exhibit characteristics such as a positive attitude and reliability are generally disengaged and not actively participating in employment or training pathways,” he said.
|
“ReBoot will engage with disadvantaged and disengaged young Australians in initiatives of up to 12 weeks, to build their capability and aspirations.”
|
Mr Robert said the program will provide tailored, community-focused early interventions, which may range from hands-on learning and mentoring to work experience through engagement with industry.
|
“Participants will then be in a better position to engage with existing youth employment programs to continue their pathway to training or employment.”
|
|
A competitive procurement process will select expert not-for-profit organisations to deliver ReBoot which will begin in early 2023.
|

This week, the first national crisis support line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was announced.
|
|
|
|
Designed, led and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, 13YARN will offer a confidential, one-on-one yarning opportunity for mob with a Lifeline Australia trained Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Crisis supporter 24 hours, 7 days a week.
|

NSW Skills Conference: 15 June 2022
|
|
|
|
NSW Skills Conference is on Wednesday 15 June at Dockside Darling Harbour. This year, there are some great speakers lined up and we hope you can continue to support and attend.
|
AEN NSW & ACT would like to continue to offer Victorian GTOs a discount to attend the conference. They are currently offering all AEN Member GTOs registrations at AEN Member rates. Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 876 participants have been supported with 785 currently in training.
|
|
|
|
Currently, there are 18 participants on our active caseload:
|
- Electrical - 7
- Plumbing - 3
- Carpentry - 4
- Other trades - 4
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer, whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.
|
|
|
|

Safe Respectful Workplaces - GTO Workshops
The mission at Women Onsite is to support committed women of all ages and from all walks of life into apprenticeships or traineeships. Part of their role in creating change is to work with the teaching systems and employers to build capacity and ensure they are meeting their OH&S requirements to keep women safe, including from gendered violence.

Youth Mental Health First Aid (Accredited)
Mental health first aid is the help provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by accredited MHFA Instructors across Australia.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid Course is for adults working with adolescents (those aged between 12 and 18 years), however, the course can be relevant for those helping people who are a little older.
|

NCVER Update
|
This new research reveals what high-quality training delivery looks like in practice, how it is measured and what are the barriers and enablers for RTOs.
|
For RTOs, the concept of quality VET delivery covers more than teaching and learning, encompassing the whole student experience from before enrolment to after completion. It should be transformational, student-centred, fit-for-purpose and adapt well to changing stakeholder needs.
|
RTOs use a wide range of data sources and other information to evaluate the quality of the training they provide. The types of information used can depend on the size and type of RTO.
|
While many RTOs are strongly focused on quality delivery, they are faced with barriers. The participating RTOs report that achieving high quality delivery is challenged by funding issues, a compliance view of quality, the inflexible nature of training packages and difficulties in recruiting, developing and retaining teachers and trainers.
|

2021 VET policy initiatives

The Timeline of Australian VET policy initiatives has been updated to include 2021 initiatives.
The timeline is an existing NCVER product available in the VET Knowledge Bank on the VOCEDplus website.
First published in 2018, it provides information about national, state and territory programs and policy initiatives that have impacted participation in vocational education and training (VET) from 1998 onwards.
