New Horticulture Traineeship Program

horticulture traineeships
On Thursday 14 April, the Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas launched the new horticulture pilot program at Plunkett Orchards in Mooroopna, Goulburn Valley. The pilot program will link workers with expert training and on-the-job experience to build their skills and open new career pathways.

The pilot program will cover 3 regions within Victoria - Mildura, Goulburn Valley and Gippsland. GTOs are now invited to submit a pilot proposal that will increase the number of people entering a horticulture traineeship in a sustainable way - either for a single and/or multiple regions by no later than Sunday 22 May 2022.

Pilot Program Goals
  • Attracting students to undertake Production Horticulture training through the pilot.
  • Recognising the candidate students’ existing relevant skill or past training record that can be credited toward course enrolment
  • Supporting students to complete a certificate II, III or IV in Production Horticulture or other related apprenticeship and traineeship option through the pilot.
  • Improving the capacity of host employers to support students as workers so that students feel supported and interested in continuing in horticulture roles.
  • Through an evaluation, highlight the benefits of the approach and areas of improvement.
For further information and the pilot proposal template, please contact Helene Hederics at helene@aen.org.au.

Regional Victoria Hosting 2026 Commonwealth Games

Victoria has been confirmed as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. It is estimated the Commonwealth Games will contribute more than $3 billion to Victoria’s economy, creating more than 600 full-time equivalent jobs before the Games, 3,900 jobs during the Games and a further 3,000 jobs beyond the Closing Ceremony.

Victoria 2026 will be held across multiple regions, creating a new multi-city model for the Commonwealth Games. Four regional hubs will be established in Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Gippsland, each with their own athletes’ village and sport program. The regional hubs will host athletes, officials and fans following an Opening Ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Shepparton will also host sporting and cultural events as part of Victoria 2026. There will also be a strong para sport program, with six sports already locked in.

Victoria 2026 will also invest significantly in community infrastructure, including housing and world-class sports facilities. This will leave a legacy of affordable housing for the regions and modern sports infrastructure to encourage Victorians to get active and attract future major events.

A Victoria-wide program of live sites and activations will ensure visitors are welcomed in every corner of the state, with the Queen’s Baton Relay to traverse the regions in the weeks leading up to the Opening Ceremony.

For more information, and to express interest in being involved, visit Victoria 2026.

Evaluation of the Skills Organisations Pilot Program

The Skills Organisations Pilot program is currently being evaluated to explore strengths and weaknesses of the model.

In establishing the Skills Organisations (SO) Pilot program, the Australian Government has supported an independent evaluation of the program. The evaluation is being undertaken by a consortia comprising Urbis Pty Ltd and ARTD Ltd and is being progressed through two separate but interrelated projects:
  • Project 1 - an assessment of the establishment phase of the SO pilot has been completed.

Skills Organisation Pilots Evaluation Project 1 – Implementation Review Report.
  • Project 2 – an assessment of the early achievements of the SO pilots against the broader policy objectives of the program is currently underway.

Project 2 is expected to be completed in April 2022.
Lessons learnt from the evaluation of the SO pilots are helping to inform broader improvements to the national VET system, including industry engagement reforms.

Victorian Aboriginal and Local Government Strategy

vic aboriginal strategy
This week the Victorian government launched the Victorian Aboriginal and Local Government Strategy. This is an important resource for Victorian councils which serves as a practical guide and will help embed the voices and priorities of Aboriginal communities at a local government level. It is centered on seven strategic pillars:
  • Culture, respect and trust
  • Awareness and engagement
  • Accountability and direction
  • Governance and participation
  • Economic participation
  • Health and wellbeing
  • Resourcing and funding.
The Strategy recommends actions for Local Governments, the Victorian Government and Aboriginal communities that progress Aboriginal self-determination and reconciliation. It has been developed to support alignment of the Local Government sector with the Victorian Aboriginal Affairs Framework 2018-2023, the Victorian Treaty process, the Victorian Closing the Gap Implementation Plan and the work of the Yoo-rrook Justice Commission.

The Strategy includes a clear framework for shared decision-making processes and actions for Aboriginal Victorians working together with local government based on mutual control, shared power and decision-making, fairness, respect, and trust.

For further details, please visit Victorian Aboriginal and Local Government Strategy.
