Labour Announces New National Cabinet
|
On Tuesday 31 May, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his new ministerial cabinet which was sworn in on Wednesday.
|
Key ministers for our sector include:
|
- Brendan O'Connor, Minister for Skills and Training
- Tony Burke, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations
- Jason Clare, Minister for Education
- Dr Anne Aly, Minister for Early Childhood Education and Minister for Youth
- Anthony Chisholm, Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Assistant Minister for Education
Following the swearing-in of the full ministry, there was also an announcement that the following departmental and administrative changes that will take effect on 1 July 2022:

- A new Department of Employment and Workplace Relations will be created to implement and administer the Government’s workplace relations, jobs, skills and training agenda.
- A new Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will be created to deliver the Government’s job-creating climate change and energy agenda.
- Reflecting key priorities of the Government, the Department of Health will be renamed the Department of Health and Aged Care, and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications will be renamed the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts.
- The Department of Finance will gain responsibility for data policy, including the Digital Transformation Agency, as well as de-regulation.
- The Department of Home Affairs will gain responsibility for natural disaster response and mitigation, including the National Recovery and Resilience Agency.
- The Attorney-General’s portfolio will gain responsibility for criminal law enforcement and policy, including the Australian Federal Police.
- The new Administrative Arrangements Orders are published on Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet

AEN Mid-Year Conference: Registrations Closing Soon!

AEN will host our Mid-Year Conference again in 2022. This year’s theme has a focus on diversity and inclusion – with a particular focus on women in trades.

Over one-day, delegates will hear from representatives of the Victorian Government and other special guests. This year’s event promises to be jammed packed with a range of topics and updates with a conference dinner following in the evening.

National Reconciliation Week: 27 May – 3 June
|
|
National Reconciliation Week is being held this week and this year's theme is Be Brave. Make Change. It is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
|
Last year, Reconciliation Australia encouraged all Australians to take action; not just in National Reconciliation Week but every week of the year. They saw unprecedented response to Reconciliation Australia’s suggested actions for everyday and for braver action. This year, they are asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
|

NAIDOC Week 2022 will be held from Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July. This year's theme – Get up! Stand up! Show up!
|
|
Events will be held around Australia during NAIDOC week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
|
|
|
|
NAIDOC is celebrated by people from all walks of life, Indigenous and non‑Indigenous. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support and amplify the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Builders Academy Australia - Annual Training Awards
|
|
|
On Friday 27 May, Builders Academy Australia held its Annual Training Awards.
|
|
The Awards celebrated 11 Individual Award categories for Student of the Year. Winners from each individual category competed for the award title, 'Overall 2021 Student of the Year.'
|
|
|
|
Gary Workman was pleased to announce the 'VET in Schools Student of the Year' winner Daniel Breich (Certificate II in Building and Construction, Pre-apprenticeship). Congratulations to Daniel!
|

Victorian Training Awards: Nominations Closing 17 June
|
|
The closing date for nominations is now midnight Friday 17 June, giving you 3 weeks left to nominate or finalise your nomination for the 2022 Victorian Training Awards.
Don't miss out on the chance to nominate someone who deserves recognition for their hard work and efforts in the VET sector. You can even nominate yourself for an award.
This is a great opportunity to share your contribution to the VET sector, and to meet other like-minded industry leaders and peers. All winners receive $5,000 in prize money and a trophy.
Winners in categories aligned with the Australian Training Awards can attract national recognition by representing Victoria at the national awards in November 2022, and finalists and winners also have the chance to become part of the Victorian Training Awards Ambassador Program, which provides further media, speaking, and networking opportunities.

ATO Tax Time Resources for Apprentices/Trainees
|
Apprentices and trainees, not sure where to start when it comes to tax time? The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) can help.
|
The ATO has a range of resources and tips to help you lodge your tax return, including a handy guide for apprentices to help you work out what you can and can’t claim. You can also access this information in other languages, here.
|
Download the ATO app for a fast and easy way to keep track of receipts and invoices and, once you’ve lodged, you can keep track the progress of your return. Just remember most tax returns lodged online take about two weeks to be processed.
|
If you’re lodging online this year, the ATO suggests the best time to lodge is from late July. By then, all your information from employers, banks and health funds will be automatically included in your tax return. So, all you need to do is check the information and add anything that’s missing.
|

Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 908 participants have been supported with 817 currently in training:

The top three occupations are Electrical (231), Plumbing (167), and Carpentry (130).
|
|
|
|
Currently, there are 30 candidates on our active caseload:
|
- Plumbing - 9
- Electrical - 6
- Carpentry - 6
- Business - 3
- Engineering - 1
- Other - 5
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer, whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.
|
|
|
|

Strategies for delivering VET online: A guide for educators
|
|
Online delivery is now common practice in VET, but how do we ensure quality, good practice and a great student experience?
|
- Keep in mind there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ model. Many variables can affect the teaching context. As a result, it is good practice to adapt the balance and nature of training delivery to class size, the discipline or topic being taught, the infrastructure available to educators and students, student needs and expectations, and other factors.
- Incorporate both instructional and participatory content, presented in either real-time and non-real time formats or as a combination. Instructional content tends to be transactional, with students receiving information and knowledge. In contrast, participatory content is designed for active student engagement. Consider drawing on the benefits of both types of content and using real time and non-real time delivery to support student engagement.
- Never let technology drive the learning design. Design the ‘best’ way to learn the topic at hand first. Then adopt the simplest applications of available technological tools, in order to implement that ideal learning approach.
