Cheaper Car Rego for Thousands More Victorian Trade Apprentices
|
This week the Victorian Government expanded the half price apprentice car registration program to include all eligible apprentices who use their vehicle to get to and from work.
|
|
Thousands of trade apprentices who rely on their car to travel to work every day will be hundreds of dollars better off, with the Victorian Government extending its registration discount program.
|
Under the scheme, eligible apprentice tradies can apply for a 50 per cent discount on their vehicle’s registration fee and Transport Accident Charge.
|
The scheme, established in 2016, was previously only available to apprentices in defined trades who used their vehicles to travel between work sites during work hours.
|
All apprentices are now able to apply if they drive their vehicle in the course of their apprenticeship, for example to carry the tools of their trade to and from work sites, or if they use their vehicle for travel to and from work between 8.30pm and 5.30am.
|
Eligible apprentices paying standard registration on a light vehicle in metropolitan Melbourne, will save $408.20 per year, outer metropolitan areas $381.30 and in rural areas $349.95.
|
To be eligible for the discount all apprentices must be registered with the Victorian Registrations Qualification Authority, must use their own car, van or ute and regularly use it in the course of their apprenticeship.
|
Bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, chefs, hairdressers, electricians and plumbers will be among those eligible for a discount if their employers agree that the use of the vehicle is an essential part of their work.
|
|
Eligible apprentices are now able to apply to receive discounted registration. Applications can only be made online via the VicRoads website.

Victorian Employer Skills Survey Results 2017
|
In late June this year the Victorian Department of Education released It’s Victorian Employer Skills Survey results for 2017.
|
The survey gathered insights from over 12,100 employers across the state. The survey sought to better understand the skills, recruitment and training needs of Victorian employers. Participants were invited to identify:
|
- the impact of skills gaps on business operations and productivity
- recruitment challenges and skills gaps faced by their businesses
- the effect of training on addressing skills needs
- challenges in accessing quality training.
The sample was drawn to include the views of 19 industry sectors across 9 Victorian regions.

Australian VET Policy Forum in Melbourne
|
On Monday morning this week the Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews outlined a vision for a strong, flexible and high quality vocational education and training (VET) system—one that delivers real skills for real careers.
A vision that builds on the Australian Government’s work to restore VET’s reputation for excellence and quality, and boost apprenticeship and traineeship numbers.
Minister Andrews addressed the Australian VET Policy Forum in Melbourne, and said the Government’s work which is underway in the sector is already having a real impact.
“Historically, Australia’s skilled workforce has underpinned our country’s stability and prosperity however under the previous Labor Government apprentice and trainee numbers began to fall—in a single year (2012-13) there was the largest drop ever of 110,000 (22%)—leaving us facing areas of skills shortage,” Minister Andrews said.
“We must continue to strengthen Australia’s VET training system to produce the high quality, skilled workforce for the future."

One-millionth Apprentice Sign-Up by MEGT
|
|
Earlier this week MEGT celebrated their One-millionth apprentice sign-up-Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology apprentice Mr Kyal Gunn.
|
Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews was at Kangan automotive centre of excellence in Docklands, Melbourne to mark the significant milestone for Kyal and MEGT.
“MEGT is the largest contracted provider of support services to employers of apprentices and trainees in Australia. It has been providing Australian Apprenticeships Support services since 1998,” Minister Andrews said.
|
“I congratulate MEGT on supporting one million apprentices over the past two decades—it is an astounding achievement. The work of providers like MEGT is integral to the success of the Australian Vocational Education Training system."
|
“As a member of the Australian Apprenticeships Support Services Network, MEGT provides support every step of the way for prospective apprentices including pre-commencement advice and targeted, in-training support throughout an apprenticeship.”
|
The sign up of MEGT’s one-millionth apprentice comes as the Australian Government celebrates 20 years of support for Australian Apprenticeships. During this period, the Government has provided $9 billion to assist businesses to take on apprentices.
|
MEGT CEO, David Windridge, said his organisation was there at the beginning of the Australian Apprenticeships program in 1998 and has gone from strength to strength over that time.
|
“Through the promotion of vocational education and training, the program has enabled MEGT to provide valuable links between employers, job seekers and training organisations in our local communities, developing real skills and delivering real career opportunities,” said
Mr Windridge.
|
“From humble beginnings to our one-millionth sign-up, MEGT is thrilled to be celebrating this milestone at the same time we mark the 20th anniversary of the program itself.
|
