Apprenticeship trade papers
Victorians who have successfully completed their apprenticeship over the last five years will have their trade formally recognised following the re-introduction of Trade Papers by the Victorian Government.
|
People who complete an apprenticeship work hard and deserve recognition of their trade – which is why industry, training providers and apprentices have been calling for the return of Trade Papers since 2014.
|
|
Trade Papers are a separate certificate awarded to those who successfully complete their formal training through an apprenticeship. They serve as a signal to employers and customers that this person has done the hard yards and is able to apply occupational skills on-the-job.
|
The trade papers will be implemented by VRQA and further information will be available shortly.
|
VRQA new regulatory field services provider
|
|
The new apprenticeship field services provider is the Victorian Apprenticeship Field Services (VAFS).
Starting this month, VAFS will be checking in with apprentices and trainees across Victoria to make sure they have what they need to complete their apprenticeships and traineeships.
|
Apprentices and trainees will be able to provide feedback on their work and training progress, via telephone interviews and online surveys. This complements workplace visits by VAFS authorised officers.

AEN Awards - Nominatons Close Soon
|
Nominations for the 2018 AEN Annual Awards opened on the 1 August.
Each year AEN presents a number of awards to recognise the great work apprentices, trainees, GTOs and their staff do across the State.
Awards include:

- ATO Best Victorian Apprentice and Trainee Award
- Outstanding OH&S Initiative Award
- GTO Service Excellence Award
- OH&S STAR Award
- GTO Industry Service Awards
- AEN Lifetime Achievement Awards
|
The awards will be presented at the AEN annual dinner on Thursday 22 November.
|

Labour Market Update
|
Victorian Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.8%
Victoria’s unemployment rate has dropped to 4.8 per cent — its lowest rate in seven years – with more than 10,000 full-time jobs created in the month of August alone.
|
Victoria’s unemployment rate is below the Australian average of 5.3 percent.
|
Since 2014, more than 370,000 jobs have been created in Victoria – contributing to more than a third of the nation’s employment growth with the majority of these – 247,600 – are full-time roles, an increase of 12.5 percent.
|
New insights into local labour markets – New ABS report
New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week provides fresh insights into the jobs that are filled during each year. This information provides reliable annual data on filled jobs for more than 2,200 different regions across Australia.
ABS Chief Economist Bruce Hockman said the new findings into Australia’s labour market, published in Jobs in Australia, had been made possible by combining a range of data sets.
“For example we know that Australians worked a total of more than 18.5 million jobs in 2015-16, an increase of 490,000 jobs since 2011-12,” Mr Hockman said.

New National Report Analyses Industry Skills Demand
|
|
The National Overview provides high-level analysis of industry skills needs, and the factors and trends affecting the demand for skills at a national and cross-industry level.
|
The overview draws on Industry Reference Committee (IRC) 2017 Skills Forecasts and Proposed Schedules of Work and supports identification of training package review and development work including opportunities for reform.
It links the cross-industry analysis on skills needs with the activities and initiatives of the Australian Industry and Skills Committee and its network of Industry Reference Committees.

BGT to Move Head Office
|
BGT will be the lead tenant at the Barkly Street campus, under a five-year agreement struck with the Department of Education and Training.
|
The Barkly Street site has been vacant since Ballarat Secondary College’s class of 2016 completed VCE, after declining enrolments.
|
BGT chairman Mark Schultz said the not-for-profit would operate from the site by January, using it as a state-of-the-art training centre to help young people gain employment.
|
“This is a historic moment in the life of BGT as we fulfil our mission to ‘create success stories through skills and jobs’ by matching high quality, work-relevant training with local industry needs,” he said.
|
Education minister James Merlino said the site would allow the training provider to expand their important work, while preserving the historic school buildings.
|
“The Ballarat community told us they wanted the former Barkly Street campus to remain a space for the community and that’s exactly what we’ve achieved,” he said. “It means people across the region will have better access to the support they need to find employment.”
|

Koorie Education Celebrated At 2018 Wurreker Awards
|
|
Last Week Training providers, teachers, employers and employees who have made a significant contribution to Koorie training and employment were celebrated at the 2018 Wurreker Awards.
|
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney congratulated nominees and winners at the annual awards, hosted by the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI), which recognise outstanding achievement in supporting Koorie learners in vocational education and training (VET) and Koorie employment.
|
Through the Marrung: Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026, the Victorian Government is working in partnership with VAEAI to improve learning and development outcomes for Koorie learners.
|
Koorie learners participating in VET are also supported through the Wurreker strategy, which aims to improve education and training delivery in the VET sector to achieve quality education, training and employment outcomes for Koorie learners.
|

October 8-10 World VET Congress
|
|
From 8-10 October, the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) will be exploring new challenges in vocational and professional education and training caused by advances in technologies and automation. The theme of the Congress is ‘Preparing for the Skills Future, Now’ and will be looking into how these challenges are impacting work, society and people.
|
Hosted by Australian TAFEs, the Congress brings together community colleges and polytechnics from around the world, as well as experts in professional and vocational education and training. With a focus on action-based solutions to these challenges, the Congress will make a difference to the outcomes of millions of vocational and professional students around the world.
|
On the Monday 8 October AEN will also be hosting a specific apprenticeship site tour with Holmesglen Institute aimed specifically at international delegates as part of the world congress conference.
