AEN Awards - Nominatons Close Tomorrow!
|
Nominations for the 2018 AEN Annual Awards opened on the 1 August and close this Friday, 28 September.
Each year AEN presents a number of awards to recognise the great work apprentices, trainees, GTOs and their staff do across the State.
Awards include:

- Outstanding OH&S Initiative Award
- GTO Service Excellence Award
- OH&S STAR Award
- GTO Industry Service Awards
- AEN Lifetime Achievement Awards

The awards will be presented at the AEN annual dinner on Thursday 22 November.

Official Launch of Victorian Trade Papers
|
|
On Tuesday morning this week, Minister for Skills and Training Hon. Gayle Tierney launched the Victorian Trade Papers at Kangan Institute's ACE Centre.
|
Victorians who have successfully completed their apprenticeship over the last five years will have their trade formally recognised following the re-introduction of Trade Papers by the Victorian Government.
|
"People who complete an apprenticeship work hard and deserve recognition of their trade – which is why industry, training providers and apprentices have been calling for the return of Trade Papers since 2014," said Minister Tierney.
|
"Trade Papers are a separate certificate awarded to those who successfully complete their formal training through an apprenticeship. They serve as a signal to employers and customers that this person has done the hard yards and is able to apply occupational skills on-the-job."
|
|
The trade papers will be implemented by VRQA and further information will be available shortly.
|
|

Victorian Labour Hire Authority - New Website
|
|
This week the Victorian Government launched the Labour Hire Licensing Authority website.
You can visit the website to find out more about the licensing scheme and what it means for Victorian labour hire providers, hosts and workers.
The website will be regularly updated to keep you informed of the licensing scheme's commencement, regulations and planned education and information sessions.

October 8-10 World VET Congress
|
|
From 8-10 October, the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) will be exploring new challenges in vocational and professional education and training caused by advances in technologies and automation. The theme of the Congress is ‘Preparing for the Skills Future, Now’ and will be looking into how these challenges are impacting work, society and people.
|
Hosted by Australian TAFEs, the Congress brings together community colleges and polytechnics from around the world, as well as experts in professional and vocational education and training. With a focus on action-based solutions to these challenges, the Congress will make a difference to the outcomes of millions of vocational and professional students around the world.
|
On the Monday 8 October AEN will also be hosting a specific apprenticeship site tour with Holmesglen Institute aimed specifically at international delegates as part of the world congress conference.
|

$50 million Up For Grabs to Help NFPs
|
|
Not-for-profits have the chance to win one of five $10 million grants, with an Australian banking group making a $50 million philanthropic pledge hoping to kickstart social change.
|
The Macquarie Group announced its 50th Anniversary Award on Monday, and said $50 million would be distributed among five NFPs globally, over a five-year period.
|
Macquarie Group CEO, Nicholas Moore, said supporting communities had always been important to the group, and he was “delighted” to announce the new award.
|
“Our people have devoted thousands of hours to work with non-profit organisations around the world and contributed over $330 million to drive social change at the local community level,” Moore said.
|
“We are delighted to mark our 50th anniversary by extending this tradition with a further $50 million commitment to initiate or build on bold ideas which address areas of social need.”
The grant will be awarded to groups who present a project that showed lasting community benefit “with a defined approach to measuring its social impact”.
|
“The project should either be deliverable within a five-year period, with funding to be released according to an agreed project timeline, or demonstrate a strong sustainability model post funding period,” the Macquarie Group said.
|
Applicants must be a registered NFP in their applicable country, have a minimum annual revenue of $4 million, a board of directors, and audited financial statements
|
Applications opened this week, and close in mid-November, with winners announced in May 2019.
|
|

NAEN Executive Officer Announces Resignation
|
The Chair of the National Apprentice Employment Network (NAEN) Stuart Diepeveen last week announced that National Executive Officer, Ms Lauren Tiltman, advised of her intention to stand down and seek new opportunities overseas.
|
Mr Diepeveen said that the Board had reluctantly accepted Ms Tiltman’s resignation and recognised the contribution she had made.
|
“The Board of NAEN wishes to extend its great appreciation to Lauren for her significant organisational achievements over the past two years.
|
“We would of course have liked Lauren to remain in the leadership role, but we fully understand her circumstances and wish her every success in her new endeavours,” he said.
|
|
He said that Ms Tiltman would finish up in her role in December before moving to the United Kingdom. The association would shortly commence recruitment for a new national executive officer, based in Canberra.
|
|

New Training To Get Victorian Workers NDIS Ready
|
|
Victorians looking to work in the disability sector will soon have access to new training needed for a job in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), thanks to a new project funded by the Andrews Labor Government.
|
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney announced a $1 million boost for the NDIS Future Workforce Capability Project, led by Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) in partnership with RMIT University and the Future Social Service Institute.
|
The project is designed to provide high quality training and other curriculum products needed to ensure disability workers are ready for work.
|
Training products focus on workforce skills to assist and support NDIS clients to achieve their goals while helping disability support workers understand and navigate their important role in advocating for the rights of people with a disability.
|
Resources have been designed in collaboration with people who have a disability as well as their advocacy organisations to ensure training adequately meets their needs.
|
The project is supported by key organisations working in the disability sector including the Salvation Army, Melbourne City Mission, Carers Australia and VCOSS.
|

New OECD Report: Indigenous Employment and Skills Strategies in Canada
|
|
A report released this week by the OECD looks at a range of key labour market, economic and social indicators related to Canada’s growing Indigenous population, which comprises First Nations, Inuit and Métis. In 2016, there were over 1.6 million Indigenous People in Canada, accounting for 4.9% of the total population, which is a significant increase from 3.8% in 2006.

The report looks at the implementation of the federal government’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Training Strategy through in-depth analysis across four case study areas, including
|
- the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resources and Development in Winnipeg, Manitoba;
- Community Futures Treaty Seven in Calgary, Alberta;
- MAWIW Council in Fredericton, New Brunswick; and
- Kiikenomaga Kikenjigewen Employment and Training Services (KKETS) in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The report highlights critical success factors to better link Indigenous People to high quality jobs while also providing recommendations regarding future labour market and skills programming for Indigenous People in Canada.

Focus on... Soft skills, employability and education
Sometimes referred to as employability, generic, transferable or, more recently, 21st century skills, 'soft skills' encompass a range of non-technical skills that employers are increasingly requiring in potential employees. These skills include communication, teamwork and collaboration, creativity, problem solving, analytical, entrepreneurial and digital skills.
With the nature of work changing, the demand and need for soft skills and their impact on education has become a significant focus for governments and industries around the world.
The latest edition presents a snapshot of research that explores soft skills for the 21st century, soft skills and vocational education and training (VET), and examples of soft skill teaching and learning practices.

Please note that the next release of the AVETMISS Validation Software (AVS) is due to go live at the end of September 2018. Our AVS validation update list contains the included updates and notice of past and future updates planned for later in 2018.

Student declaration and privacy notice
|
In instances where RTOs do not have evidence that a student has signed the Student Declaration and Privacy Notice (included in the sample enrolment form within the AVETMISS VET Provider Specifications, and as Schedule 1 of the National VET Data Policy), RTOs must still submit their AVETMISS data to NCVER.
RTOs will not be in breach of Australian Privacy Principle (APP) 6, as set out in Schedule 1 of the Privacy Act 1988, in disclosing personal information to NCVER in their AVETMISS submission. NCVER may collect personal information, including sensitive information from a person other than the person to whom the information relates, as it is ‘required or authorised by or under an Australian law’ (specifically section 4.1 of the Data Provision Requirements 2012 (DPRs), which are made pursuant to subsection 187(1) of the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011). It is considered the DPRs authorise the disclosure of information and a student’s consent is not required for RTOs to disclose their personal information to NCVER.
Further advice on any amendments to the Student Declaration and Privacy Notice will be provided in our Data Support Bulletins as it becomes available.

As mentioned in the June 2018 Data Support Bulletin, the NCVER Portal has a brand new design. This includes an RTO Hub, which is a dedicated space for registered training organisations.

The RTO Hub, which can be accessed straight from the Portal homepage, consolidates all information important to RTOs into one area making it much easier to find what you need. The RTO Hub includes the AVETMIS Standard, AVETMISS reporting information, tools and support.
