At this event, guests will hear from the Victorian Government on the Victorian VET system and industry leaders as they discuss their views on how Apprenticeships and Traineeships are being utilised globally as a solution to youth unemployment as well as meeting future employer workforce needs.

New SafetyFirst video
|
This week AEN released a new safety video aimed directly at apprentices and trainees, highlighting the OH&S performance results collected over the past 5 years.
|
|
Over the past 5 years our members have been tracking workplace accidents for their apprentices. Overall we have now collected data on over 50,000 apprentices in a wide range of trades and industries.
|
So what have the survey results shown?
|
- The greatest at risk are 1st year apprentices aged between 15-24 years of age.
- The results show that the less experienced you are the more potential for a workplace accident.
- Young male apprentices within the building and construction, engineering, automotive and electrical trades are the greatest at risk.
The main accident types over the past 5 years include:
|
- Lacerations (cuts) to the hands.
- Sprain and Strains to the back (manual lifting).
- Foreign objects in the eyes.
These accidents may not seem like a big deal, but they can all have serious consequences.
|
These results indicate that there are a number of simple things you could do to improve your workplace safety.
|
Take a minute to think about the job you are about to do, and to make sure you are doing it safely.
|
- Remember to always ask if you are not sure about something.
- Use the correct piece of equipment for the job.
- If you are lifting something always do it safely!
- Wear your personal protective equipment at all times - especially your safety glasses and gloves!
Always think "SafetyFirst" so you don’t become a statistic.

Australian Productivity Commission – Report
|
The Annual Report on Government Services (RoGS) provides information on the equity, effectiveness and efficiency of government services in Australia.
|
The 2019 reports were progressively released over the past couple of weeks:

Developing The Next Generation Of Victorian Leaders
|
|
Young people aged 16 to 25 are encouraged to apply for the 2019 YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament to make their voices heard – and experience what it’s like to represent their peers in the Victorian Parliament.
|
The Victorian Government is investing $640,000 over the next four years to support the Youth Parliament and Press Gallery programs, and to create more opportunities for young people with disability to participate.
|
Youth Parliament has a long and successful history in Victoria, having helped shape more than 25 pieces of Victorian legislation including laws on mandatory bike helmets, roadside drug testing and gun reforms.
|
Young parliamentarians will attend an intensive training camp in May where they will develop teamwork, public speaking and leadership skills to equip them for their parliamentary experience.
|
Teams of young parliamentarians will then draft, debate and vote on Bills during a three-day sitting at the Victorian Parliament in July.
|
Bills passed by the Youth Parliament will be presented to Government ministers for consideration.
|

Telstra Business Awards – Nomination Open
|
Now in its 27th year, the awards recognise Australia’s most innovative and entrepreneurial businesses across four categories:

- emerging and energised
- small and succeeding
- medium and making waves
- social change maker
|
The social change maker category is for organisations that have positive social impact at “the core of their purpose”.
|
It is open to not-for-profit, social enterprise and profit-for-purpose organisations – contributing a minimum of 10 per cent of their profits back to the cause.
|
Telstra Business Awards ambassador and acting group executive of Telstra consumer and small business, Michael Ackland, said business owners and NFPs should take a chance by nominating themselves for this year’s awards.
|
As part of nominating, every entrant will receive a personalised in-depth business report with professional insights and advice to help guide future growth for the business or NFP.
|
Nominations for the awards are open until Thursday 7 March 2019.

New CEO For Development Victoria
|
The Victorian Government this week announced the appointment of Angela Skandarajah as the new Chief Executive Officer of Development Victoria.
|
Development Victoria is an important partner in the Government’s infrastructure program, delivering projects that create cultural and recreational facilities, and bring key urban and regional precincts to life.
|
Ms Skandarajah brings a wealth of leadership and governance experience to the role, most recently as Development Victoria’s acting Chief Executive and General Counsel.
|
In a career spanning more than two decades in the legal profession and property development industry, Ms Skandarajah has been a partner and the national head of Minter Ellison’s real estate, environment and planning practice.
|
Ms Skandarajah has specialised in major infrastructure projects and Crown land development and is a regular contributor to industry bodies on development and real estate issues.
|
Among the 45 projects Development Victoria is currently working on are the redevelopment of Melbourne Park, the Melbourne Arts Precinct and State Library Victoria, the development of the new GovHub in Ballarat, precinct renewal at Docklands, Fishermans Bend and central Dandenong, and a range of projects to improve housing diversity and affordability.

With women making up more than 50 per cent of its workforce, Development Victoria is leading the way in promoting women in the development industry.
|
