2019 Skillaroos Announced

AUSTRALIAN TEAM ANNOUNCED TO COMPETE AT THE WORLDSKILLS INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

With less than five months until the opening of the 45th WorldSkills International Championship taking place in Kazan, Russia, WorldSkills Australia has selected an elite team of 40 people, including 15 competitors and 25 experts and officials who will represent our nation at the competition – the leading international skills event for 2019.

The 15 young men and women from across Australia, known as the Skillaroos, will compete against the best apprentices and trainees from the 60 WorldSkills member countries in the hope of becoming World Champions in their chosen trade or skill area.

The Skillaroos, all aged between 19 to 22, represent a wide range of trades and skills with the majority aligning with the National Skills Needs list, these include: Cloud Computing, Electrical Installations, Plumbing and Heating and Graphic Design Technology.

The 45th WorldSkills International Championship will bring together more than 1,600 young people, representing 60 countries and regions who will compete in 56 skill competitions. It will take place in Kazan, Russia from 22-27 August 2019. It is expected that more than 250,000 spectators will attend the Championships. Australia, currently 10th on the WorldSkills rankings, is aiming to better this and hoping for a top 5 finish.

In 2019 Tomorrow Bound Careers Expo and Tertiary Information Service (TIS) will join forces to run one major education event!

It is anticipated that over 2000 school aged students from years 9-12 will attend.

Tomorrow Bound is an education, employment and training focused careers expo that provides secondary school students and the local community with the opportunity to discover a range of courses, pathways and employment opportunities available throughout the City of Greater Bendigo and beyond.

Exhibitors include University and TAFE education providers, registered training organisations (RTOs), employment and support agencies, local businesses, industry associations and employers.

Applying for a Trade Paper Through VRQA

A trade paper is a certificate that commemorates the completion of an apprenticeship.​

You can​ apply for a free trade paper if you have completed both:
  • a recognised apprenticeship in Victoria, which you started after 1 January 1995
  • the apprenticeship's relevant qualification with a TAFE, trade school or registered training organisation.

When you apply, you'll need to provide your qualification title and code. Your TAFE, trade school or registered training organisation can provide you with this information.

To apply for a trade paper, register an account and submit an application in the trade paper portal, which is provided by VETASSESS.

Information from the ATO to Support Apprentices at Tax Time

Recently the ATO released information to assist apprentices complete the annual taxation.

The information explains the various aspects of an apprenticeship and what you may be eligible to claim.

Victorian Government – Change of Date for Budget

Last Friday the Victorian Government announced it would delay the State Budget until after the federal election.

The Victorian Budget will be handed down on Monday 27 May, after the federal election on 18 May.

The Parliament will still sit as scheduled on 30 April 2019.

Sunday 28 April is World Day for Safety and Health at Work and Workers’ Memorial Day. Promote a safe and healthy workplace and plan and adapt to the future of work at your workplace.

This year, Safe Work Australia are promoting a safe and healthy future of work.

Safe Work Australia also released a new report Workplace Safety Futures report that explores the future of work and the impact of emerging trends on WHS and workers’ compensation over the next 20 years.

Nominations Open For 65th Victorian Training Awards

65th Victorian Training Awards
Apprentices, students, teachers, employers and training providers can now nominate for the 65th Victorian Training Awards.

Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, Gayle Tierney, has opened nominations for the awards this week, which recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations in the Victorian TAFE and training sector.

“The Victorian Training Awards don’t just celebrate success—they inspire it.”

“This is your opportunity to nominate an outstanding individual or organisation in the VET sector that deserves extra recognition.”

There are 16 categories including six for individuals, four for employers, four for training organisations as well as an Industry Collaboration Award and the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Winners will be announced at the Victorian Training Awards gala ceremony in Melbourne in September, with winners receiving $5000 in prize money.

Some winners will also have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Brisbane in November.
