Gearing Up For The First Ever Victorian Youth Week
|
Young people will be celebrated and recognised with more than 100 activities across the state during the inaugural Victorian Youth Week in April.
|
Minister for Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos this week announced the successful grant recipients for Victorian Youth Week 2018, which will run from 13 to 22 April.
|
The successful Victorian Youth Week recipients will organise activities that engage young people and provide them with opportunities to express their ideas and be heard in their community, such as art exhibitions, musical performances, cultural celebrations and forums.
|
The Victorian Government is providing more than $200,000 to local community organisations, schools and councils to run activities for young people in metropolitan and regional areas during Victorian Youth Week 2018.
|
|
It includes over 50 activities in metropolitan Melbourne and nearly 60 grants in regional Victoria.
|
- Giving Everyone a Fair Go - Wheelchair Basketball – which invites young people to facilitate a wheelchair basketball workshop with Year 5 and 6 students
- Horsham Skate Park Jam – which is an opportunity for riders and skaters to showcase their skills and abilities
Activities are aimed at those aged 12 to 25 and will be held in safe environments that are alcohol, drug and smoke free.

The Victorian Government’s Youth Policy: Building Stronger Youth Engagement in Victoria sets out a plan to increase engagement with young people and embeds the voice of young people in building an even better Victoria.

Closing the Gap Report
|
The Closing the Gap Strategy was unveiled by the Rudd government in 2008, which was looking to achieve equality in health and life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous people by 2030.
|
The recent release of the progress report has revealed the government is still not on track to address gaps in life expectancy, literacy and numeracy, school attendance and employment.
|
|
Despite this, 2018 is the first year in which at least three targets have been on track since 2011.
|
The targets on track are halving the gap in child mortality, enrolling 95 per cent of all four-year-olds in school and halving the gap in year 12 attainment.
|
“With four of the existing Closing the Gap targets expiring in 2018, the Australian government is working with the states and territories and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to refresh the Closing the Gap agenda,” the report said.
|
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Parliament on Monday that the latest report was “the most promising result since 2011”.
|
He said a refreshed Closing the Gap policy would focus more on communities rather than setting broad national-level targets.

To date we have run sessions in Broadmeadows and Sunshine and have just one more to go.

Nominations Open For 2018 Victorian Training Awards
|
|
Now in their 64th year, the prestigious awards recognise and honour the outstanding achievements of vocational education and training (VET) students, teachers, and the businesses who train them.
|
The Awards are an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your skills and journey within the training and TAFE system, and meet industry experts and employers from across Victoria to help build your career.
|
The Awards are open to all Victorian students in vocational education and/or training, from a range of backgrounds and age groups. There are five student award categories, including Apprentice of the Year, Vocational Student of the Year, Trainee of the Year, Koorie Student of the Year, and School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year. Winners receive $5,000 prize money, and become Victorian ambassadors for the TAFE and training sector.

Nominations for the awards are now open - until midnight on 2 April 2018.

This publication provides a summary of data relating to students, programs, subjects and training providers in Australia's government-funded vocational education and training (VET) system (defined as Commonwealth and state/territory government-funded training).
|
The data in this publication cover the period of 1 January to 30 September 2017. For comparative purposes, it also examines this data against previously submitted data for the 1 January to 30 September 2015 and 2016 periods, and also for the 1 January to 30 June 2017 period.
|
NCVER uses statistical methods to estimate apprentice and trainee data such as the number of commencements and completions each quarter.
