Research Survey: “What will it take” – Employer Views Needed
|
Social Ventures Australia (SVA) and the Apprenticeship Employment Network (AEN) have commissioned PwC to do a piece of work to:
|
- understand the factors that drive employer behaviour in relation to creation of quality jobs for youth; and
- identify some policies that could promote greater opportunities.
We are looking for employers willing to contribute 10 minutes to seek their views to better understand what can be done to increase opportunities for young people to secure skilled work.
We are hoping that you may be able to support our research by completing this 10 minute short employer survey.
The survey will be open until Friday 10th September.

Work-based Learning Initiatives and Recovery Around the World During Pandemic Times

Throughout 2020 and the first half of 2021, we had a unique glimpse of where the future of work-based learning is headed. With the pandemic affecting workplaces around the world, we witnessed shifts to various degrees in several sectors, affecting all segments of the workforce.
|
|
|
|
The year 2020 was an opportunity for us to reconsider and evaluate the types of work-based learning models that are most relevant and adaptable to shifting labour market needs and lockdown measures. By mid-2021, we came to accept the terms of a hybrid workplace and have even embraced certain aspects that follow this model. In this edition of our newsletter, we are happy to share with you a compilation of how our Members, Partners and Networks quickly shifted policies, and adapted work-based learning needs for the next cohort of talent.
In our recently launched 2020 GAN Global Annual Report, we also provide insight into our new realities and direction of where work-based learning is headed. Through our work with international organisations, large companies and country networks, our key takeaway infers the necessity of agile workforces and work-based learning programmes that foster flexible skills for the next generation.
We commend those who have been able to not only continue offering work-based learning, but who have also reframed and adapted these programmes to current times. We are proud to showcase them in this edition’s Annual Report.

WorldSkills Conference 2021: The Road Ahead - Skills for a Resilient Future
|

A year ahead of WorldSkills Shanghai 2022, experts from international organizations and government officials, leaders of business and industry, as well as skills organizations and youth will meet to launch the key topics and tracks driving the global skills conversation.
|
|
|
|
With the COVID-19 pandemic as the backdrop for all current discussions in skills and beyond, WorldSkills Conference 2021 will explore the future of VET and focus on the solutions and learnings emerging from this crisis.
|
The three main tracks of this year's Conference will lead the way in global skills development for future generations:
|
- skills for green jobs,
- poverty reduction through skills, and
- the future of apprenticeship systems.
The five-day Conference programme will be a hybrid event, taking place both in Shanghai as well as online, and is designed to allow as many international participants as possible to join the conversation.

Victorian Training Awards 2021 Finalists Announced
|
|
A pool of 44 finalists have been announced for the 67th Victorian Training Awards, recognising the achievements of apprentices, students, teachers, trainers and employers.
|
Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney this week announced the finalists and said this year’s event would acknowledge the resilience and innovation of the sector amid the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.
|
Finalists have been named across six award categories for individuals, four for employers and four for training organisations as well as the Industry Collaboration Award.
|
This year’s awards received the highest number of nominations in more than a decade, with individual award categories proving most popular among nominees.
|
Award recipients will receive $5000 prize money and a selection of award recipients will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards.
|
The event is supported by principal partner Apprenticeship Employment Network (AEN) and the Global Apprenticeship Network (GAN Australia).
|
|

NCVER Update
|
This week NCVER released a new report: Apprentices and trainees 2020: impacts of COVID-19 on training activity. The report shows in the first six months of 2020, the number of suspended apprentice and trainee contracts soared but by September were lower than the previous year.
Apprentices and trainees 2020: impacts of COVID-19 on training activity charts the tumultuous year apprentices and trainees experienced by exploring monthly trends in contract commencements, suspensions, cancellations and withdrawals and completions.
The data show, following the introduction of public health restrictions, contract suspensions increased by more than 650% in March and April 2020, and by almost 300% in May 2020 compared with the same period in 2019. The report also explores the impact of the pandemic on industry.

Retrenched Apprentices and Trainees Program
|
|
|
|
This program has now supported 822 participants since May 2020, and 326 apprentices and trainees have commenced with a new employer.
|
|
|
|
Currently, there are 46 participants on our active caseload:
|
- Electrical - 22
- Plumbing - 6
- Carpentry - 8
- Other trades - 10
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once on the register, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer, whilst also directing you to the most appropriate advice and assistance while you remain out of employment.
|
|
|
|
