Growing Australia’s Digital Workforce Report
|
|
|
The Future Skills Organisation launch the "Growing Australia's Digital Workforce" report, the final report of the Digital Skills Organisation.
|
|
While the report contains a number of observations and insights here are four of the most important.
|
|
|
|
- Every person in the workforce now needs to have digital skills.
- Simple skill descriptors will make it easier to describe the digital skills needed across the economy. The report identifies the need for digital experts, digitally enabled and digitally informed workers.
- A more flexible training system is required which can cope with the rapid pace of technological change.
- Teachers and trainers must be upskilled to deliver digital training across different qualifications.

Regional Jobs Grow as Unemployment Falls to Record Low
|
|
Sustained jobs growth has pushed Victoria’s regional unemployment rate to a new record low, bolstering local communities and providing confidence across the state.
|
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) labour force figures released today show Victoria’s regional unemployment rate has fallen to 2.8 per cent – the lowest ever in the state and significantly lower than the national regional jobless rate of 3.2 per cent.
|
Enabled by a strong economy, more than 1,100 new jobs were created in regional Victoria last month, bumping the total number of people in work in the regions to 856,000 – also a record high.
|
Regional jobs growth since the Andrews Labor Government was elected November 2014 has outstripped all other states on a proportional basis and the growth in absolute terms is just shy of 200,000.
|
The ABS results show significant drops in unemployment across the state, with unemployment rates at 1.5 per cent in Hume, 2.4 per cent in the North West and 2.5 per cent in Warrnambool and the South West.
|
The expanding number of jobs coincides with recent ABS data showing thousands of people putting roots down in regional Victoria, with almost 1.6 million people now living outside of metropolitan Melbourne.
|
Victoria’s overall unemployment rate remains at an historically low 3.7 per cent, a full three percentage points below the 6.7 per cent rate left behind by the former Coalition government.
Almost 490,000 Victorians have secured work since September 2020 – more than any other state in both absolute and relative terms.
|
Victoria’s economy is strong and the outlook positive – Deloitte Access Economics last week forecast that Victoria’s economic growth would outstrip all other states over the next two years.
|
The Business Outlook Report predicted Victoria’s gross state product would grow by 1.3 per cent in 2023/24 – highest of all the states – compared with a national average of 0.9 per cent.
The report forecast Victoria would have equal highest economic growth with Queensland in 2024/25, at 1.8 per cent.
|
The most recent ABS growth data shows Victoria’s state final demand – a key performance indicator – grew by 0.7 per cent in the first quarter of the year, higher than the national average.
|

Youth Mental Health First Aid Course - SOLD OUT!
Mental health first aid is the help provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Mental health first aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training programs authorised by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and conducted by MHFA instructors across Australia.

Writing proper business-related documents in today’s workplace requires a solid understanding of the fundamentals behind how specific documents should be approached, designed and edited. Written communications in the workplace should be concise, yet thorough and well laid out. Technology enabled communications (emails and texts) should also be well thought out and designed to get the correct message across, while avoiding any potential misinterpretation.

Jobs and Skills Councils Established
|
The Australian Government has committed to delivering a collaborative, tripartite VET sector that brings employers, unions and governments together to find solutions to skills and workforce challenges.
|
|
Jobs and Skills Councils (JSCs) have been established to provide industry with a stronger, more strategic voice in ensuring Australia’s VET sector delivers stronger outcomes for learners and employers.
|
This week the Minister for Skills and Training, the Hon Brendan O’Connor MP announced that all 10 JSCs have been established, with nine fully operational and the final JSC to be fully operational in the coming months Jobs and Skills Councils delivering for businesses, workers and the economy.
|
- Agribusiness – a new entity, Skills Insight, is now operational.
- Arts, Personal Services, Retail, Tourism and Hospitality – a new entity, SkillsEQuipped, is now operational.
- Energy, Gas and Renewables – a new entity, Powering Skills Organisation, is now operational.
- Finance, Technology and Business – a new entity, Future Skills Organisation, is now operational.
- Manufacturing – a new entity, Manufacturing Industry Skills Alliance, is now operational.
- Mining and Automotive – a new entity, Mining and Automotive Skills Alliance, is now operational.
- Transport and Logistics – a new entity, Industry Skills Australia, is now operational.
- Public Safety and Government – a new entity, Public Skills Australia, is now operational.
- Early Educators, Health and Human Services – a new entity, HumanAbility, is now operational.
- Building, Construction and Property – a new entity, BuildSkills Australia, has been established and will be operational in the coming months.
As a national network of industry-owned and industry-led organisations, JSCs will provide strategic leadership in addressing skills and workforce challenges, aligning effort across industries to improve system responsiveness, build stakeholder confidence and drive high-quality outcomes for the VET sector, learners and business.

JSCs will work closely with Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA), drawing on JSA’s workforce analysis and projections to undertake planning for their industry sectors, creating a uniform understanding of the skills landscape and how skill gaps can be addressed.
|

In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship.
|
The theme for World Youth Skills Day 2023 is Skilling teachers, trainers and youth for a transformative future.
|
|
It highlights the essential role that teachers, trainers and other educators play in providing skills for youth to transition to the labour market and to actively engage in their communities and societies.
|
Technological advancements and shifting labour market dynamics increasingly call for agile and adaptable skill sets.
|
|
It is crucial that we empower young people to navigate these changes effectively. Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) is well placed to meet these demands by reducing access barriers to the world of work, ensuring that skills gained are relevant, recognized and certified, promoting green skills and practices, and offering skills development opportunities for youth who are not in education, employment and training.
|
There were also a number of online workshops and new resources launched.

Since the program commenced in May 2020, a total of 1,097 participants have been supported to date.
|
|
|
|
|
Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once registered, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer.
|
|
