International Youth Day, observed on August 12th, commemorates the vitality and aspirations of young people worldwide and acknowledges their pivotal role in shaping societies and cultivating positive change.

By promoting discussions on youth-related issues, the day fosters unity and understanding among generations and encourages innovative ideas, addressing challenges that affect young Australians.

This year, International Youth Day centres around the theme of "Green Skills for Youth," accentuating the significance of equipping young individuals with the knowledge and abilities needed to address environmental concerns.

It underscores the pivotal role of the youth in fostering sustainable practices and advocating for environmental conservation.

By providing a platform for youths to express their views, we fortify the bonds between young people and policymakers, ensuring their perspectives and innovations are integrated into policies and decisions that contribute to a more sustainable and resource efficient society.
This week Federal Skills Minister Hon. Brendan O’Connor officially launched National Skills week in old Parliament house Canberra.

As well as launching National Skills Week Minister O’Connor announced that the government is establishing a VET Qualifications Reform Design Group to be chaired by Craig Robertson – CEO of the Victorian Skills Authority.

“Its role will be to help deliver simpler more responsive system."

And the result will be a simpler, more responsive system that strikes the right balance between industry skill needs, while recognising transferable skills.

This will support people to continually build their skillset through their working lives through multiple jobs and sectors.

This is the first step in a significant body of work to deliver on our reform ambition.

It builds on the creation of Jobs and Skills Councils – a network of industry led organisations that will bring together employers and unions to work in partnership with governments and the education and training sectors.”

Have Your Say on The Minimum Workplace Hours for School-Based Trainees

The Department of Education is seeking comments on proposed options for setting a minimum workplace hours policy for school-based trainees.

The Review into vocational and applied learning pathways in senior secondary schooling, led by John Firth (the Firth Review), made four recommendations related to school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs).

The Firth Review found that “relative to full-time trainees, school-based trainees do not spend enough time in the workplace and are prevented from developing vocational competencies”.

This is due to a lack of policy structures around traineeships that mandate a minimum standard for employment-based competencies, compared with those undertaking an apprenticeship.

To address this issue, the Firth Review recommended development of a policy requiring a minimum number of workplace hours for school-based trainees.

This policy will help school-based trainees gain the skills and experience to be competitive in the employment market and ensure industry has access to skilled and vocationally competent workers.

The policy options are aimed at:
  • Helping school-based trainees gain the skills and experience to be competitive in the employment market.
  • providing industry with skilled and vocationally competent workers.
How to participate

You are encouraged to have a say on options for a minimum workplace hours policy for SBATs.

Access the discussion paper and respond through the online survey on Engage Victoria.

The consultation will close on Monday 11 September 2023.

Drivers Of Student Training Choices

The latest research from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) has found that the availability of student support services has some influence on students when choosing registered training organisations (RTOs).

This report investigates the influence of student support service offerings on students’ choice of training provider and how they compare with other drivers of student choice, for example, course cost, delivery mode and travel time. In particular, the research focuses on health and welfare support, career counselling and job-search support, and tutoring and guidance on study skills.
