This week CEO of the Victorian Skills Authority – Mr Craig Robertson announced that the Nominations for the 2024 Victorian Training Awards are now open.
|
The prestigious Victorian Training Awards will celebrate their 70th anniversary in 2024.
|
|
The awards bring together apprentices, trainees, students, teachers, training providers, employers, and industry representatives, sharing in a high-quality training system that meets the needs of all Victorians.
|
|
|

Worksafe Victoria Campaign – “Would you work for you?”
|
|
Worksafe Victoria launched a new safety campaign aimed at employers to better supporting young workers – “Would you work for you?”
|
|
Young workers have higher injury rates than other worker age groups.
|
Young Workers (aged 15-24 years old) and apprentices are often one of the most vulnerable cohorts in workplaces.
|
|
They have the highest chance of being injured in the first six months of starting a new job, due to their lack of experience and being new to the role.
|
As an employer you are responsible for ensuring that your young workers receive the
|
induction, training and information they need to work safely.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
These talented young individuals have earned the remarkable opportunity to potentially represent Australia at the prestigious 47th WorldSkills International Championships in Lyon, France, in September 2024.
|
They've been chosen as members of the Skillaroos Training Squad, aspiring to showcase Australian skills on a global stage.
|
|
Support these Training Squad members in their quest to demonstrate Australian skills excellence by contributing to their journey to the WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, where they'll compete against the world's best and bring pride to our nation.
|

The Labour Market Update is a quarterly report that provides information about issues affecting Australia’s current and emerging labour market.
|
The December 2023 update highlights:
|
- A weakening of labour market resilience
- Female employment growth is particularly strong
- 88% of total employment growth is in occupations that typically require post-school qualifications
|
The release of the 2023 Skills Priority List by Jobs and Skills Australia demonstrates the persistence of skills shortages in recent years.
|
|
|
|
In 2023, 36% of assessed occupations were in shortage (up from 31% in 2022), with the increase largely stemming from challenges recruiting in a tight labour market.
|
Aged or Disabled Carers, Electricians (General), Child Care Workers and Carpenters are the largest occupations to have persistently been in shortage since 2021.
|
|

New workplace road safety program for apprentices in the construction trades is a FREE program aims to help new apprentices on their P plates safely navigate driving challenges at work.
|
|
|
|
- Driving unfamiliar vehicles
- Fatigue and early morning driving
- Reliance on mobile phones
- Packing vehicles and securing loads
- Speed, speeding and stopping distances
- Dealing with risky or illegal situations
- One day – 6 hours including breaks and lunch provided
- Commences February 2024

The latest NCVER report shows in the first six months to 30 June 2023 there were 911 180 students enrolled in government-funded vocational education and training (VET), an increase of 4.0% compared with January to June 2022.
|
Government-funded students and courses - January to June 2023 provides a summary of data relating to domestic government-funded VET activity delivered in Australia. It contains information on students, programs, subjects and training providers.
|
The largest increases in government-funded nationally recognised qualification enrolments were in Certificate IV and Certificate III which grew by 21 020 and 14 995 respectively between the January to June 2022 and January to June 2023 periods.
|
Between January and June 2023, there were 1 016 280 government-funded program enrolments, an increase of 2.9% from the same period in 2022.
|
|
Most government-funded program enrolments were in training package qualifications, which accounted for 80.9% of enrolments. The training package that had the highest number of training package enrolments was Community Services (183 585 or 22.3%).
|
In the six months to June 2023, the most popular field of education was Engineering and related technologies with 173 830 program enrolments, 2.5% higher when compared to the corresponding period in 2022.
|

Apprentices and trainees who have lost employment are encouraged to register.
|
Once registered, apprentices and trainees will be assisted by one of our program officers until placed with a host employer through a Group Training Organisation (GTO), or directly with an employer.
|
|
