WorldSkills Australia Lyon 2024

WorldSkills Australia is pleased to announce the 2024 Australian Team, who will represent Australia at the 47th International Competition, taking place in the French city of Lyon in September.

The contingent of 33 young apprentices, trainees, and students (known as the Skillaroos) is the largest the organisation has sent overseas since Lyon last hosted in 1995.

The WorldSkills Australia delegation of competitors, trainers, officials, and team management, is the largest ever sent to an International Competition.

The 47th International Competition is set to be the biggest skills competition ever, with over 1,500 Competitors from 75 countries set to compete in 59 skills.

More than 250,000 visitors are also expected to attend the event, which will run from September 10th -15th.

WorldkSkills Australia’s participation in the International Competition aims to benchmark Australian skills excellence against global standards.

Team Australia members represent the best in their fields, which include Plumbing, Carpentry, Baking, Industry 4.0, Cyber Security, and Fashion Design.

The journey for selection has spanned two years, beginning with a regional WorldSkills competition in 2022 that involved more than 3,000 competitors.

Winners from each region then competed in the National Championships in 2023, with medallists being eligible for selection in Team Australia that will travel to France.

Each Skillaroo will be accompanied by their expert who have overseen their training and preparation to compete on the global stage, meaning the contingent wearing the green and gold will number close to 75.

For more details, including competitor profiles, please visit WorldSkills Australia.

In September 2023, the VRQA launched BuildUP.

This week VRQA released its BuildUP Campaign report.

A regulatory campaign focused on women building and construction apprentices and trainees.

VRQA opened a hotline and reached out to all women apprentices and trainees in civil construction in Victoria.

Authorised Officers spoke to 60 of them about their experiences, visiting them in the workplace or conducting phone interviews.

The good news is VRQA found high levels of employer compliance.

The bad news is that VRQA found a culture of silence when women apprentices and trainees are mistreated by employers.

The VRQA is currently following up with two employers regarding allegations of breaches to training contracts made during the BuildUP campaign.

Where VRQA finds employers who mistreat women apprentices and trainees and don’t change their ways, we will remove their approval to employ apprentices and trainees in Victoria.

Any apprentice or trainee with concerns can:

Email: vrqa.apprenticeships@education.vic.gov.au
Call: VRQA on 1300 722 603

Facilitating Crucial Conversations

Sometimes we choose to avoid difficult conversations as they seem too hard, but unfortunately the problems remain unresolved. Other times we facilitate crucial conversations and wish we knew how to handle them better. Here’s the upside: there are well-tested communication strategies to swiftly turn dysfunctional situations into constructive conversations.
