This two day program comprising two workshops focuses on building the skills of Field Officers to recognise and address language, literacy and numeracy issues when recruiting and monitoring apprentices. The aim is not to make Field Officers experts in this area but to give them the capacity to identify potential areas of concern and the resources / tools / contacts to assist the apprentice and if appropriate the host employer.
Workshop 1 Objectives
On completion of this session participants should be able to:
- Identify other participants by name and forge potential contacts for future professional relationships and networking
- Explain the term, ‘Language, Literacy and Numeracy’ by referring to the five core skills in the Australian Core Skills Framework and the five levels
- List various types of LLN in terms of some of the six ‘Aspects of Communication’
- Describe some of the English LLN requirements of various industry, workplace and apprenticeship training
- Identify examples of a person’s English LLN skills and the match or mismatch with particular apprenticeship requirements
- Experience the frustrations of trying to comprehend in an (unknown) language other than English
- Link their experience to that of culturally and linguistically diverse CALD applicants
- Discuss the characteristics of written texts and interviews used in recruitment
- Identify some relevant LLN skills within one Training Package
- Explain how one might know if a person might have difficulty with LLN requirements of the apprenticeship.
Workshop 2 Objectives
On completion of this session participants should be able to:
- Identify some relevant LLN skills in a workplace
- Explain that LLN issues are not just one person’s problem and that the best solutions come from cooperation and shared strategies
- Re-consider perceptions and answers to following questions:
- What do we do about LLN support?
- Who is we?
- How do Field Officers go about negotiating these issues?
- What could the RTO do?
- What could a host employer do?
- What could apprentices do?
- What could family and friends do?
- Name strategies to support apprentices
- Understand that skills may be latent (there but not used) due to the quality of relationships or culture in the workplace or RTO
- Summarise informed answers to the questions:
- How come some people have LLN issues?
- How to recognise or know some people have LLN issues?
- How to help?
- Prepare an individual action plan to support one apprentice.
