MIP Case Study: Victorian Group Training – Geelong Victoria

by

Victorian Group Training completed 2 Projects, 1 year 11 VCAL and 1 year 10 program both at Western Heights College Geelong.

The year 10 group extended across the Christmas school holidays with much of the work experience conducted in 2017. With this group having just completed 12 have responded in their survey they plan to commence an SBAT in the next 12 months, 4 already have.

The year 11 group of 26 students completed a project involving the design and construction of a school/community garden.  This garden has been landscaped (by students) and even includes a student made outdoor pizza oven. Students have propagated and planted the vegetation and plants and constructed the fencing and gates which involved engineering and welding of the metal gates.

All 26 participants in this program have commenced School Based Traineeships and year 12.

The partners of this project are very engaged in the community and proactively seek pathways for youth.  The community collaboration provided an opportunity for these students to enter a SBAT in 2017 in Horticulture at ‘The Paddock’ a business enterprise of Encompass community services. These participants in their SBAT will continue to explore the opportunities in Horticulture and have the experience of working with those with a disability. The transition MIP fund payments assist Vic GT with the cost of transporting these SBATs to work.

100% of the year 10 group rated the 3 elements of Work Placement, Sharing Industry Experience and Career sessions 5 out 5
